The Medical School OWL at Bielefeld University intends to fill at the Evangelisches Klinikum Bethel (EvKB) at Campus Bielefeld-Bethel a

Professorship for Pediatric Surgery (W2 TT W3 / W3)

associated with the management of the Department for Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric and Adolescent Urology.

The Medical School OWL and the University Medical Center OWL (UMC OWL), with the Klinikum Bielefeld, Evangelisches Klinikum Bethel (EvKB) and Klinikum Lippe as holders, are a young, innovative location under construction. We are looking for individuals who understand this development situation as an opportunity to create and to actively shape research, teaching, health care and organization together with us. You will be significantly involved in implementing our model study program in human medicine and can contribute innovative ideas for teaching. Our career support programs, as well as our research support programs that aim at interdisciplinary cooperation, offer you a wide range of development opportunities. At the same time, we give you a special opportunity to participate in the design of the research profile “Medicine for people with disabilities and chronic illnesses”.

The call is targeting individuals with an already established national and international profile (W3) or individuals in an early career stage with an already promising profile (W2 TT W3), who can represent the field of expertise in research, teaching, and patient care comprehensively.

Qualifications required for the position:

  • specialist qualification for pediatric surgery,
  • relevant doctorate, with additionally scientific achievements according to § 36 paras. 1; no. 4 HG NRW,
  • broad (W2 TT W3) or extensive (W3) clinical experience in the entire field of operative and conservative pediatric and adolescent surgery as well as leadership experience,
  • promisingly (W2 TT W3) or high-ranking (W3) scientific achievements demonstrated through publications and third-party funding,
  • alignment with the research profile of the Medical School OWL,
  • extensive teaching experience and experience with innovative teaching formats in the subject to be represented,
  • experience and active participation in the equality-oriented promotion of young scientists.

The qualification to participate in the D-Arzt procedure of the employers' liability insurance associations is expected.

Also desired are:

  • experience or special willingness to care for children and young people with disabilities and chronic illnesses,
  • willingness to work closely with pediatrics, neonatology, obstetrics, pediatric radiology and pediatric anesthesiology in a large interdisciplinary children's center with a level 1 perinatal center.

As the holder of this position, you will be the Director of the Department for Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric and Adolescent Urology at the EvKB on the Campus Bielefeld-Bethel of the UMC OWL. The department is responsible for up to 38 beds in the Bethel Children's Center newly built in 2023, performs approx. 2,000 surgical procedures per year, provides outpatient care for approx. 14,000 children per year and manages and organizes operations on an interdisciplinary basis in close cooperation with the Departments for Pediatrics and for Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine. Special surgical focuses are currently pediatric urology and pancreatic surgery in children. Full authorization for further training as a specialist in pediatric surgery is expected.

A long-term and sustainable research concept is expected for the further development and establishment of projects in the research fields that actively contribute to building the university's medical research profile. For example, studies on the use of robots in physiotherapy and the use of virtual reality (VR) are already established at the hospital. In terms of translational research, the professorship is intended to establish projects with representatives of the various healthcare professions in the region in addition to research topics in the clinical field.

We also expect close collaboration and networking with all surgical and conservative disciplines of the Campus Bielefeld-Bethel, in particular within the Children's Center and the Perinatal Center Level 1 of the EvKB, the supra-regional trauma center managed by trauma surgeons, the expansion of existing cooperation with the other clinics of the UMC OWL, networking with other Faculties of Bielefeld University and with doctors in private practice in the region. In line with these tasks, we are looking for an individual with leadership experience and expertise in the entire area of expertise along with excellent communication and coordination skills.

For the appeals applies:

A private-law employment contract with the University is envisaged for the performance of the duties of the professorship. The requirements for employment follow § 36 HG.
The tasks within patient care, including the right to liquidation, will be regulated via a contract for chief physicians with the EvKB.

The W2 tenure variant is initially limited to five years; after appointment, a target agreement is formulated. If the evaluation is positive in the final year, the appointment is converted into a permanent W3 professorship. Tenure evaluations are regulated in the statute for quality assurance of professorships with tenure track (TT). Tenure-track professorships are firmly established at Bielefeld University as an equal tenure option. Tenure-track professors are offered a target-group- specific personnel development program that provides support during the arrival phase and in preparation for the tenure evaluation.
