The Medical School OWL at Bielefeld University intends to fill a

Professorship for Experimental Orthopedic Research with a focus on tumor genetics and tumor microenvironment (W2)

as an executive position at the earliest possible date.

The Medical School OWL and the University Medical Center OWL (UMC OWL), with the Klinikum Bielefeld, Evangelisches Klinikum Bethel (EvKB), and Klinikum Lippe as holders, are a young, innovative location under construction. We are looking for individuals who understand this development situation as an opportunity to create and actively shape research, teaching and organization together with us. You will be significantly involved in implementing our model study program in human medicine and can contribute innovative ideas for teaching. Our career support programs, as well as our research support programs that aim at interdisciplinary cooperation, offer a wide range of development opportunities. At the same time, we give you a special opportunity to participate in the design of the research profile “Medicine for people with disabilities and chronic illnesses”.

The call aims at personalities with a promisingly national and international profile who can represent the field of expertise in research and teaching in its entirety.

The prerequisites are

  • degree in medicine or natural sciences with extensive experimental research experience in the subject of orthopedics or in experimental medicine with a corresponding focus
  • relevant doctorate, and additionally scientific achievements according to § 36 paras. 1; no. 4 HG NRW
  • very well scientific achievements reflected in corresponding publications
  • experience in the successful acquisition of (competitive) third-party funding
  • sound experience in the management and development of research projects
  • connectivity to the research profile of the Medical School OWL
  • extensive teaching experience and experience with innovative teaching formats in the subject to be represented
  • experience and active involvement in the equality-oriented promotion of young scientists

Desired are:

  • experience in setting up a biobank for fibroblasts, mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), bone cells and tumor tissue
  • experience in conducting research involving animal experiments
  • experience in the establishment and operation of a genetic engineering facility (S2 laboratory)
  • experience in the use of MSCs, iPSC and primary cell cultures for experimental bone and cartilage regeneration
  • experiences in three-dimensional co-cultures (organoids)

As the holder of this position, you will manage the research laboratory focused on basic science of the Department of Orthopedics at Klinikum Bielefeld, which is located on the campus of the Medical School OWL, and work closely with the current holder of the W3 professorship for Orthopedics.

You will support the establishment of the experimental orthopedic research platform of the Department of Orthopedics and its further development into an intersectoral and translational unit that develops, consolidates and focuses experimental research. In this context, molecular-induced processes of age-related and chronic illnesses as well as cartilage and bone regeneration will be a focus of the work. Another experimental goal is research into the tumor microenvironment. Your scientific expertise in the fields of bone and cartilage regeneration, tumor diseases and tumor microenvironment as well as in the field of chronic degenerative illnesses, in particular osteoporosis, will enable you to engage in competitive national and international scientific networking and cooperation.

We expect networking with the departments of the UMC OWL, with the medical-theoretical working groups of the Medical School OWL and the other faculties of Bielefeld University. Therefore, we are looking for an individual with leadership experience and expertise in the entire field along with excellent communication and coordination skills.
