The Faculty of Technology has a vacancy for a

Professorship (W3) for Interactive Robotics

to be filled at the earliest opportunity.

You are internationally recognized with excellent qualifications in the field of Robotics, with a special focus on robotics engineering for real-time sensory perception, physical motion, learning and action control for autonomous, interactive robots.

As a professor, you will represent the field of Robotics in research and teaching. You will actively leverage the many opportunities for interdisciplinary research cooperations available at Bielefeld University. You will particularly cooperate with other research groups within the Faculty of Technology, in particular those within the area of AI / Intelligent Interactive Systems, as well as those at the Center for Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC).

The faculty is actively participating in various collaborative projects and industrial cooperations, such as the Collaborative Research Centre TRR 318 "Constructing Explainability", with the Fraunhofer Institute for Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation and Industrial Automation (IOSB-INA), or within the competence network Intelligent Technical Systems in East Westphalia-Lippe (it´s OWL). The CITEC is also associated partner in the Robotics Institute Germany (RIG). The Faculty of Technology and CITEC are key pillars of the university’s profile development process in the fields of human-AI teamwork and human-centered automation. Participation in these collaborative projects as well as in upcoming application initiatives that further strengthen the faculty‘s profile in Cognitive Informatics / Intelligent Interactive Systems is expected.

Participation in the bachelor and master programs of the Faculty of Technology, in particular the B.Sc. programs in Computer Science and „AI & Cognitive Informatics“ as well as the M.Sc. programs in „Intelligent Interactive Systems“ and „BioMechatronics“ is expected. Teaching at the undergraduate level takes place in German.

Possible thematic research areas of the professorship include (but are not limited to):

  • Robotics engineering for realtime sensing, perception or motor control
  • Modeling, planning and decision-making in open-world settings
  • Design and control of humanoid robots
  • Dexterous and complex manipulation skills
  • Foundational models or digital twins for robot control
  • Architectures and approaches for human-robot collaboration
  • Interactive, cooperative, or collaborative robot learning
  • Multi-robot systems and collaboration
  • Real-world applications (e.g. in service robotics, automation, health, prothetics)

Active participation in the self-administration of the Faculty of Technology is expected.

The requirements for employment follow § 36 HG NRW.
