The Medical School OWL at Bielefeld University intends to fill a

Professorship in Endocrinology and Diabetology (W3)

at Campus Klinikum Bielefeld as of 01st September 2027.

The Medical School OWL and the University Medical Center OWL (UMC OWL), with Klinikum Bielefeld, Evangelisches Klinikum Bethel (EvKB), and Klinikum Lippe, are an innovative medical location under development. We are seeking individuals who embrace this development process as an opportunity to actively create and shape research, teaching, patient care, and organization in collaboration with us. You will be significantly involved in implementing our model study program in human medicine and can contribute innovative ideas for teaching. Our career and research support programs, aimed at interdisciplinary cooperation, provide a wide range of development opportunities.

Qualifications required for the position include:

  • specialist qualification for Internal Medicine and Endocrinology and Diabetology
  • excellent clinical experience in the entire field of Endocrinology and Diabetology, clinical leadership experience
  • methodological qualifications and extensive experience in conducting clinical trials
  • relevant doctorate and additional scientific achievements according to § 36 paras. 1; no. 4 HG NRW
  • outstanding scientific achievements demonstrated through relevant publications
  • experience in project management and experience in the successful acquisition of
    competitive third-party funding
  • compatibility with the research profile of the Medical School OWL
  • extensive expertise in innovate teaching formats in the subject to be represented
  • active participation in the equality-oriented promotion of young scientists

Desirable qualifications:

  • interest in further developing the infectious disease spectrum of the specialist clinic
  • interest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in the Endocrinology with a focus on improving diagnosis, treatment and patient care

At Klinikum Bielefeld, you will manage the Department of General Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Diabetology and Infectiology of the UMC OWL and will be part of the cross-site Centre for Geriatric Medicine. Further, you will coordinate the work of the Centre for Endocrinology, Diabetology, Gastroenterology, Infectiology and Internal Medicine at Klinikum Bielefeld across all locations and cooperate closely with the clinic for bariatric surgery. Oncology is one of the main specializations at Klinikum Bielefeld. Within this framework, the Department of General Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Diabetology and Infectiology is primarily responsible for the endocrine tumor segment. The department’s current research focuses on tumor development and tumor immunology of the thyroid gland. Close cooperation is expected with the working group for Experimental Endocrinology, which is currently being established at the Medical School OWL’s campus, focusing on adrenal gland disorders and tumor metabolism.

The position requires high-level scientific expertise in a clinically relevant field of research in Endocrinology and Diabetology, as well as the initiation of one’s own clinical trials and participation in multi-center studies. Of particular interest are the transition phase of adolescents with endocrine disorders into adult medicine, as well as the endocrinology of ageing.

As the holder of this position, you should be willing to address gender and diversity-related issues to improve health care practices. The establishment of an OWL cohort of people with gender dysphoria is currently in preparation.

We expect close collaboration with other departments of the UMC OWL, other faculties of Bielefeld University, and the medical community (private practices) in the region. Therefore, we are seeking an individual with leadership experience and expertise in the entire field, along with excellent communication and coordination skills.

The duties of the professorship are to be carried out under an employment contract with the University by the requirements for employment outlined in § 36 HG. The tasks within the scope of medical care, including the right to liquidation, will be regulated via a contract for chief physicians with Klinikum Bielefeld.
