In the Department of Organic Chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry of Bielefeld University, the following position is available to be filled at the earliest possible date:
We are looking for an outstanding young scientist or a scientifically proven personality with an excellent, internationally competitive research programme in the field of sustainable organic synthesis, in particular in synthetic macromolecular chemistry and/or homogeneous catalysis. A combination of both fields is desirable, for example in the development of sustainable polymers from bio-based monomers, polymerisation catalysis using transition metals, and reactions for a circular polymer economy. The willingness to work closely with the working groups of the Faculty of Chemistry and active participation in existing and future research initiatives is explicitly expected. The planned research should complement existing work at the faculty in a methodologically meaningful way.
In teaching, the professorship includes the representation of organic chemistry in its entire width in the study programmes Chemistry and Biochemistry. In addition, the future holder of the position is expected to play a committed role in shaping the planned Bachelor's and Master's courses in Sustainable Chemistry, particularly in the field of macromolecular chemistry and homogeneous catalysis.
Recruitment requirements are a university degree, pedagogical aptitude, a qualified doctorate in the field of organic Chemistry as well as additional scientific achievements, which are evaluated exclusively and comprehensively in the appointment procedure (§ 36 HG NRW).
In the case of appointment as a W1 professorship, the appointment will initially be for a fixed term of three years with the possibility of extension for a further three years following a positive interim evaluation. In the event of a positive tenure evaluation in the final year, subsequent transfer to a permanent W2 professorship is envisaged. The interim/tenure evaluations are regulated in the statutes on quality assurance for professorships with tenure track (TT).
Tenure track professorships are firmly established at Bielefeld University as an equal appointment option. Tenure-track professors are offered a target group-specific personnel development programme that provides support during the arrival phase and in preparation for the interim and tenure evaluation.
Applications from suitable severely disabled persons and persons with equivalent disabilities are expressly encouraged.
The Faculty regards gender equality as an important task, which the future holder of the position will actively participate. Bielefeld University has received several awards for its successes in gender equality and is certified as a family-friendly university. We welcome applications from women. The faculty handles applications in accordance with the State Equal Opportunities Act. Family time will be taken into account in the selection process.
Bielefeld University supports dual-career couples in organising a joint work and life centre.
Please submit applications with the usual documents (letter of motivation, which also includes an indication of the desired salary level (W2 or W1 with tenure track to W2), CV including list of third-party funding, list of publications with identification of the five most important publications, presentation of current and planned research (max. 5 pages), teaching concept (max. 2 pages)) online via Bielefeld University's appointment portal by 12/06/2026.
