The Medical School OWL at Bielefeld University intends to fill a

Professorship in Thoracic Oncology (W2)

at the Department of Internal Medicine, Pulmonology and Medical Intensive Care at Campus Bielefeld-Bethel (CBB) as soon as possible. The professorship is limited to a duration of five years and is linked to a permanent senior physician position.

The Medical School OWL and the University Medical Center OWL (UMC OWL), with Klinikum Bielefeld, Evangelisches Klinikum Bethel (EvKB), and Klinikum Lippe, are an innovative medical location under development. We are seeking individuals who embrace this development process as an opportunity to actively create and shape research, teaching, patient care, and organization in collaboration with us. You will be significantly involved in implementing our model study program in human medicine and can contribute innovative ideas for teaching. Our career and research support programs, aimed at interdisciplinary cooperation, provide a wide range of development opportunities.

Qualifications required for the position include:

  • specialist qualification for Internal Medicine and Pulmonology
  • broad clinical experience in the field and leadership experience
  • relevant doctorate and additional scientific achievements according to § 36 paras. 1; no. 4 HG NRW
  • excellent scientific achievements demonstrated through relevant publications
  • experience in project management and experience in the successful acquisition of third-party funding
  • experience in the design and conduct of clinical trials
  • compatibility with the research profile of the Medical School OWL
  • extensive expertise in innovate teaching formats in the subject to be represented
  • active participation in the equality-oriented promotion of young scientists

Desirable qualifications:

  • experience in the establishment, development and leadership of a certified lung cancer centre
  • additional qualification in Intensive Care Medicine

The professorship is based at the Department of Internal Medicine, Pulmonology and Medical Intensive Care at EvKB – Campus Bielefeld-Bethel, one of Germany’s leading university-affiliated centres for pulmonology. The department covers the full spectrum of pulmonary medicine and includes an interdisciplinary intensive care unit run by pulmonologists. The department is particularly recognized for its high-level and interdisciplinary care of malignant pulmonary diseases. An expansion in the field of thoracic oncology is planned. Active participation in the pulmonary intensive care unit is expected, particularly for candidates with an additional qualification in Intensive Care Medicine.

A key focus of the research activities is the investigation of the immunological, biological, and imaging-related mechanisms of malignant tumors of the lung, pleura, and mediastinum, as well as pulmonary metastases. The primary focus of this research is the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic concepts, as well as the implementation of care-related study concepts.
In addition, the successful candidate is expected to actively contribute to the university-, faculty-and institution-wide Core Facility MR Imaging and to participate in collaborative research projects within the Medical Faculty OWL. In this context, strengthening basic research is expressly expected.

An active involvement in the further development of the Lung Cancer Centre at the Evangelisches Klinikum Bethel (EvKB) is expected. The centre is part of the Ostwestfälisches Lungenkrebszentrum Ev. Klinikum Bethel - Bielefeld | Klinikum Gütersloh, which is certified by the DKG and a growing cross-sector network project, that strengthens thoracic oncology care in the OWL region.

In addition, an interdisciplinary Centre for Clinical Research with a Clinical Trial Unit (CTU) is planned at EvKB. This will be implemented in close cooperation with the Haematology and Oncology, as well as other medical specialties. The aim is to promote the implementation, development and organisation of joint clinical studies in areas such as thoracic tumours. You will have a leading role in planning, promoting and implementing these studies.

We expect close collaboration with other departments of the UMC OWL, other faculties of Bielefeld University, and the medical community (private practices) in the region. Therefore, we are seeking an individual with leadership experience and expertise in the entire field, along with excellent communication and coordination skills.

The successful candidate should demonstrate willingness to address gender- and diversity-related aspects in order to improve clinical care practice.

The following applies to the appointment:

The duties of the professorship will be carried out within the framework of a public-law employment relationship with the University (no civil service status). The appointment requirements are governed by § 36 HG.
The duties within the scope of medical care are regulated by a contract with Evangelischen Klinikum Bethel gGmbH (EvKB).
