For the Primary school (G) and the Primary school with integrated special education (G/ISP), you will study a total of four study programme variants:
Educational Sciences
Basic Mathematics
Basic Language Training
Integrated Studies for Primary Education ("Sachunterricht").
You will study one of the aforementioned study programme variants to a slightly greater extent than the other three study programme variants. You study the three smaller study programme variants as a "subject", the larger study programme variant becomes your "major subject". In your major subject, you will study Modules totaling 80 (G) or 89 (G/ISP) Credit points (LP), in your three subjects totaling 55 LP each (educational sciences totaling 64 LP).
If you study Sachunterricht as part of your degree program in Primary School with Integrated Special Education, Bildungswissenschaften / Integrierte Sonderpädagogik is automatically your major subject. Thus, you will study Sachunterricht as a subject.
If you study Sachunterricht as part of your degree in Elementary Education, you are free to choose what you want to study as your major subject: Basic Mathematics, Basic Language Training, or Integrated Studies for Primary Education ("Sachunterricht").
You will determine your major subject prior to the start date of your degree program when you enroll. If you wish to change your major subject at a later time, please see the instructions under Changing Major Subject (Primary School Education).
As a rule, you will study one more Module in your major subject compared to the subject in the Bachelor's degree, and you will write your Bachelor's thesis in the major subject. In the Master's degree, you will study either a small additional module in the major subject, or a module that is somewhat larger in scope compared to the subject studied.
You can see the different structure in Integrated Studies for Primary Education ("Sachunterricht") between the subject and the major subject on the study plan:
In the first semesters, the program consists of three compulsory modules for students of both the subject and the major subject: "Introduction to Integrated Studies for Primary Education ("Sachunterricht")", "Natural Sciences" and "Social Sciences". In the major subject, you study a full module each semester; in the subject, the first three modules stretch over four semesters.
In the major subject from the fourth, in the subject from the fifth subject related semester onwards, an individual focus is set. Depending on your interests, you can choose to deepen your studies in Integrated Studies for Primary Education ("Sachunterricht") / Natural Sciences. In this case, the specialization in the subject Integrated Studies for Primary Education ("Sachunterricht") takes place specifically in one of the reference subjects Biology, Chemistry, History, Social Sciences or Physics. In the major subject Integrated Studies for Primary Education ("Sachunterricht") / Natural Sciences, a further module is studied in addition to this specialization, through which the chosen area of Social Sciences or Natural Sciences is additionally deepened.
In the Master's degree, depending on the choice made in the Bachelor's degree, a reference subject is again chosen: If a reference subject from the area of social sciences was chosen in the Bachelor, you will study with a reference to natural sciences in the Master of Education, and vice versa. In the major subject Integrated Studies for Primary Education ("Sachunterricht"), a final module is also studied.
