The diversity of language necessitates research on different levels: from the qualitative description of
textual content and dialogue situations to the collection of corpora to the creation and quantitative
evaluation of controlled experiments. To fulfill these requirements the central lab of the department of
Linguistics and Literary Studies at Bielefeld University is composed of different labs, which currently
include the following:

recording studio
multimodal interaction lab

behavioral lab
articulation lab

The LiLi recording lab records audio and video for studio productions and field studies. The laboratory
facilities enable the creation of voice recordings, video documentation and surveys, among others. The
lab is divided into the recording studio and the multimodal interaction lab.
A spacious insulated sound booth allows for professional audio recordings that can be used for controlled
production studies with high audio quality in accordance with standards in articulatory phonetics.
The multimodal interaction lab allows for professional audio and video recordings of interactive settings
(two party, multi party, monologue task-based, free dialogue), with multiple camera angles, for multimodal
recordings.

The equipment of the behavioral laboratory enables the running of various computer-based experiments. The
division into separate insulated booths makes it possible to run up to five experiments simultaneously.

Electromagnetic articulography (EMA) is a method for recording articulatory gestures during speech (e.g.,
lip, palate or tongue movements). The lab in Bielefeld is equipped with the Carstens Dual Articulograph AG
501. This extraordinary equipment with two synchronous EMAs allows for the simultaneous high-resolution
recording of two speakers during a dialogue in the same location.

The EyeLab is used for eye-tracking experiments for reading and understanding language. The lab activities
are coordinated by the Experimental Pragmatics group. In our lab, we use two SR Research Eye Trackers for
the
study of language.

In the Human-Agent-Interaction Lab computer models of language use are made tangible in dialogue situations
and multimodal inter-action with embodied/corporeal agents (e.g. the Furhat robot). We also conduct studies
investigating the behavior of humans when interacting with robots.
