Here you can find all the information you need about our teaching offers, our foci, and a variety of materials for students.
ETE students in Bielefeld learn a variety of teaching topics and methods, and gain access to an array of experiences that support the transition from student to teacher, including
• how to teach the means to end of using language communicatively, like grammar, lexis and pronunciation
• how to support and develop communicative competences (like listening and speaking, reading and writing, as well as mediation)
• how to teach through and about media, including film, literature and digital applications
• how to critically reflect on culture and society
Students also learn about, experience and reflect on an assortment of teaching and learning approaches and methods, including (but not limited to) communicative and collaborative language teaching, action- and production-oriented methods, task-based language learning, drama pedagogy, inclusive teaching in heterogeneous classrooms and teaching with textbooks constructively.
Incoming students can expect to gain experience with task design, evaluation, and assessment that follows the guidelines and goals of relevant educational policies (like the Common European Framework of Reference, the Bildungsstandards and Kernlehrplan of North Rhine-Westphalia). They also gain school experience via internships for which they receive expert preparation, support, and post-processing. This includes support with the research projects during the practical term with the aim of systematically reflecting on issues of language teaching.
Beyond this, ETE students can expect professional support with their BA and MA theses, as they gain the skills, competences, experiences, and qualifications that help them transition into the profession of English language teaching.
Dear students interested in writing their BA/M.Ed thesis with a focus on teaching,
The English Teacher Education (ETE) team is delighted that so many of you are committed to taking up questions of learning and teaching English in their final academic projects. However, many of our lecturers get more requests for supervision than they can possibly manage to supervise and provide feedback to each term. In order to accommodate as many ETE projects as possible with an adequate supervision, the ETE team has decided to slightly change the procedure of finding supervision: Instead of addressing lecturers individually, please direct future requests for supervision to this email address: ete-team@uni-bielefeld.de. We will then allocate the requests among the ETE team to our maximum capacities for each term and get back to you within two weeks (during term) on if and who of the team can supervise you.
In order for us to find the best supervision for you, please apply with the following information about you and your envisaged project:
Your name, in which term of your studies you are and if plan to write a BA or MEd thesis
The month you plan to (realistically!) hand in your thesis. Please also indicate if you plan on continuing to the MEd/Referendariat directly afterwards
Working title of your project
A short abstract (around 300 words) about your research interest and the way you want to follow up on it (in an empirical or conceptual way? Which theories and methods are central?)
A first bibliography of relevant literature (ca. five sources)
Please indicate if you need one or both supervisors from the ETE team. If you would like to write your thesis with specific lecturers from the ETE team, you can indicate them and give reasons (courses you have taken with them, discussions started in earlier papers/study project etc.).
Those of you who at this point already have a confirmation of supervision by any of our lecturers will be supervised as agreed. However, you too, please do write to this central email address to confirm your topic, the lecturer(s) and your envisaged date of handing in so you can be part of our allocation list for the right term. Thank you!
Note: If you are writing your BA/MEd thesis (or module paper) with a focus on education, please consider taking the profile module 7.5 course Advanced Academic Writing in Educational Contexts. The course is designed to support you in your process of writing an ELT thesis.
We hope for your understanding.
Best wishes from your
ETE team
