Teaching with patients

In the Bielefeld medical degree programme, teaching with patients (UaK) formats are offered to students from the first semester onwards in order to prepare them not only theoretically but also practically for the demands of medical practice at an early stage.

Teaching with patients is a small group format in the medical degree programme in which students acquire practical skills. In accordance with the Medical Licensing Regulations, teaching with patients takes place in groups of 3-6 students depending on the course content.

Participation in the UaK in the Medicine degree programme requires student attendance, which must be documented. To do this, students register in the electronic course catalogue (eKVVV) by entering a personalised code in the eKVVV after the course. This registration can be used to track whether students have attended the courses to the required extent. Further information on registering in the electronic course catalogue (ekvv) can be found here.

Teaching in the teaching practice

Students gain practical insights into outpatient medicine early on in their studies. The following practical phases in the outpatient sector are completed during the course of the degree programme:

During their studies, students complete three block placements totalling 4 weeks. Students start their first block work placement in GP care in the 2nd semester. This placement can be completed in a general medical, GP internal medicine or paediatric practice.

The curriculum-accompanied clinical traineeship lasts 30 days and takes place between the 5th and 6th semester in a teaching practice at Bielefeld University.

As part of longitudinal patient support, students accompany a patient in a teaching practice over a longer period of their studies.

At the end of their studies, students can complete part of their practical year in outpatient medicine.
