ATTENTION: Ideally, approval for internships should be applied for before the start, but at the latest before the last day of the internship.

Instructions for applying for internships for students of the BSc programme Psychology with the profile „Psychotherapy"

The requirements formulated here for the professional internships in the profile "Psychotherapy" correspond to the specifications of the Psychotherapists Act and the Licensing Regulations for Psychotherapists and thus enable admission to the Master's programme "Psychotherapy" and thus training towards the licensing examination in psychotherapy.

In order to ensure that the internships are carried out in compliance with licensing requirements, the internships must be approved in advance by the internship coordinators of clinical psychology. The application must therefore be submitted by the last day of the internship at the latest.
You can find all the necessary information and step-by-step instructions on how to apply in the documentation guide.

The internship coordinators of clinical psychology are available as contact persons for internships.

Requests can generally only be resolved in person during consultation hours.

For information on (telephone) office hours, please refer to the website of the respective internship coordinator.

IMPORTANT: Please carefully enquire about the general procedure and the required documentation BEFORE contacting this information page. Experience has shown that most of your questions can be clarified quickly in this way.

The internships include an orientation internship of 150 hours and the Berufsqualifizierende Tätigkeit I (BQT I) of 240 hours.
Both internships must be carried out as continuous internships and can take place full-time or during the course of study. The average number of hours per week should not be less than 10.

The orientation internship and the BQT I can also be carried out within a single internship of 390 hours, as long as the requirements for the internships are met.

  • The orientation internship serves to acquire initial practical experience in general areas related to patient care.
  • Students are to be provided with the insights into the professional ethical principles as well as the institutional, legal and structural framework conditions of patient care that will enable them to apply these appropriately in their professional activities.
  • In addition, students are to be provided with insights into the structures of interdisciplinary cooperation as well as structural measures for patient safety, which will enable them to use these in their later professional activities.
  • The orientation internship comprises 5 ECTS points, which correspond to a workload of 150 hours (in one continuous internship).
  • It takes place in interdisciplinary health care facilities or in other facilities in which counselling, prevention or rehabilitation for the maintenance, promotion and restoration of mental health are carried out, in a block or during the course of study.
  • The internship is guided by a person with professional experience who has completed a diploma or master's degree in psychology or who has a license to practice as a psychotherapist, psychological psychotherapist, child and youth psychotherapist, specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy or specialist in psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy.
  • Internships that were completed before the start of the degree programme can be credited to the orientation internship upon application by the student if they meet the above requirements in terms of content. In such cases, please contact the internship coordinators of Clinical Psychology in good time (please note office hours and email address!).

Vocational Qualification Activity I (Berufsqualifizierende Tätigkeit I/ BQT I) serves to acquire initial practical experience in specific areas of psychotherapeutic care.
During BQT I, the students are to be provided with basic insights into the institutional, legal and structural framework of psychotherapeutic health care institutions.
The students shall be enabled to,

  • to recognise the framework conditions of and the distribution of tasks in interdisciplinary cooperation and to cooperate appropriately with the various professional groups in accordance with the distribution of tasks, as well as
  • to develop and apply basic competences in communication with patients and with other persons or occupational groups involved.

In BQT I, students are active for a total of 240 h (in a continuous internship) in the following facilities or areas.

  • in facilities for psychotherapeutic, psychiatric, psychosomatic or neuropsychological care, in facilities for prevention or rehabilitation comparable to the above-mentioned facilities,
  • in facilities for people with disabilities or in other areas of institutional care with a connection to psychotherapy.
  • The guidance must be provided by a psychotherapist or a child and youth psychotherapist.

The BTQ I is carried out during the course of study or in a block and may be completed at the earliest when the student has acquired at least 60 ECTS points.

Mandatory number of hours / target weekly working hours = number of weeks

→ Rounding the number of weeks to the next even decimal place gives you the number of weeks + the number of additional days (3.2 → 3 weeks and 1 day, 3.8 → 3 weeks and 4 days etc.)

Example:
150 hours / 35 hours worked per week = 4.28 → 4.4 weeks, i.e. 4 weeks and 2 days

The Psychology Internship Database allows students to get an overview of possible internship placements, drawing on testimonials from past interns.
