  • You want to get to know other PhDs and Postdocs and their projects, but don’t know where and how?
  • You have a talk soon (maybe your first one in English) and would like to receive friendly, constructive feedback?
  • You are stuck on your thesis and need a motivation boost? Let’s get you back on track!
  • You would like to find people who struggle with the same (methodological, motivational, work-life-balance…) issues - or found a way to overcome them?
  • You like to eat cake?
  • You are a kindred spirit and would like to meet people in a similar situation?
  • You can offer advice?

Then you are cordially invited to the 1st RTG SFB 1646 & Friends Symposium hosted by the CRC 1646 “Linguistic Creativity in Communication”.

We - PhDs and Postdocs from the Creativity CRC - are organizing this symposium to get to know other PhDs and PostDocs who share our love for language(s)! This is first and foremost a social networking event but would like to give you and us the additional opportunity to talk about our research as well.

We are delighted to announce Dr. Aleksandra Ćwiek (ZAS Berlin) as our guest speaker on "The RISE of a PhD: Navigating Chaos, Crisis, and Success in Academia."

What to Expect?

We will start the day with an engaging talk by Dr. Aleksandra Ćwiek on “how to PhD”, followed by many opportunities to talk to each other, ask questions, share advice and eat cake.

You can sign up for slots to present whatever you want to share – but fear not! It does not need to be a perfect, polished presentation: you can rehearse a talk, discuss messy (first) ideas for your next steps, give people a glimpse at your work in progress, get  more comfortable speaking in front of a group, try out the English version of a presentation, give a presentation you’re really proud of – anything goes!

There will be  plenty of time for  friendly and constructive discussions, where people from different backgrounds join in to provide different perspectives on your analyses, data, research, questions, …

The presentation slots are about 45 minutes (up to 20 minutes presentations + 25 minutes discussion). Slots are assigned on a first-come-first-served-basis.

When and Where?

The symposium will take place on April 2nd, 2025 from ca. 8:45 - ca. 16:00.

This is an in-person event held at the University of Bielefeld. More details will be announced closer to the event.

How to Attend?

If you would like to give a presentation, email us until 26/03/2025 at crc1646-rtg@uni-bielefeld.de. Slots are assigned on a first-come-first-served-basis.

Anyone joining us without giving a presentation, please register until 26/03/2025 at crc1646-rtg@uni-bielefeld.de.

  • Stating the obvious: your presentation (if you’re giving one)

  • your favourite mug and reusable water bottle (if you have one)

  • A pen (there might be a Lingu Bingo happening)

Any questions?

Feel free to reach out to us via crc1646-rtg@uni-bielefeld.de.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the symposium!
