Studying part-time

Opportunities within the Bielefeld studying and teaching model of studies

At Bielefeld University, it is generally possible to study part-time. If you would like to study part-time, no special administrative steps are required on your part. In particular, there is no enrolment in a part-time degree programme and no specification of an individual standard period of study, as is sometimes required by other universities. When making your decision, please note that the BAföG regulations applicable throughout Germany do not currently provide any options for extending the standard period of study for part-time study. See the paragraph on BAföG.

There is no specific course programme for part-time study. If you are planning to study part-time, we strongly recommend that you seek advice from the student counselling service for the subject(s) in question

There are a few courses offered for which part-time study is generally not possible. This is usually due to legal requirements that are not under the control of Bielefeld University.

Courses offered where part-time study is generally not possible

  • State exam(ination) Medicine

Courses offered where part-time study is only possible to a limited extent

  • Master of Education - here the Teaching Experience Semester cannot be studied part-time
  • Master's in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy - here the inpatient internship cannot be studied part-time

Designation on the certificate

The certificate does not indicate whether you have completed the programme full-time or part-time.

BAföG

The Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) regulates financial, state support for the education of school pupils and students at federal level. The law does not currently provide for an extension of the standard period of study for part-time students. Please note that Bielefeld University has no influence on this.

Requirements of the state of NRW
