The aim of the Bachelor's degree programme is an academic qualification that enables graduates to operate successfully on the labour market in various fields of activity. Two different degrees can be obtained in the Bachelor's degree programme: the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). After completing a Bachelor's degree as their first professional qualification, graduates can either go straight into employment or continue on to a master's course. Students who wish to become teachers need a Master of Education in order to work at a school. The path to a doctorate is also flexible: in addition to the Bachelor's and Master's path, it is also possible to start a doctorate after completing the Bachelor's degree.
The structure of the degree programme at Bielefeld University allows first-year students to be flexible. The decision as to which career direction to take can be reconsidered and, if necessary, changed during the course of their studies.
However, the later a decision is changed in the course of studies, the more likely it is that a change of programme type will be accompanied by a time delay. This applies in particular to the decision in favour of or against a career in teaching. So if you are not yet sure at the beginning of your studies whether you want to become a teacher and at the same time want to avoid delays in the course of your studies, you should take advantage of one of the numerous student counselling services offered by Bielefeld University at an early stage.
The Bielefeld University model of studies provides for seven different programme types in the Bachelor's degree, four of which have the professional goal of becoming a teacher.
This programme type combines a major subject (90 credit points) with a minor subject (60 credit points). In addition, there are individual subsidiary subjects (30 credit points).
This programme type is similar to the structure of the combined bachelor's degree for advanced secondary and comprehensive schools (GymGe) and the combined bachelor's degree for advanced secondary and comprehensive schools (HRSGe). It is therefore theoretically possible to switch between these programme types in the first semesters. Early counselling is required in any case.

Interested students can also specialise in integrated special education and acquire the qualification to become a teacher for special educational needs with a further Master's degree. In this case, however, one of the subjects chosen in the Bachelor's programme must be German Studies or Mathematics and the other subject must be one of the following: English Studies, Biology, Chemistry, Protestant Theology, German Studies, History, Art, Mathematics, Music, Philosophy, Physics, Social Sciences or Sports Science.
This programme type is similar to the structure of the combined bachelor's degree with a minor. It is therefore theoretically possible to switch between these two programme types in the first semesters. Early counselling is required in any case.
To the subject educational sciences
In this programme type with the professional goal of becoming a primary school (G) teacher, a subject or elementary school (G) as well as the two elementary mathematics subjects German literacy ("Deutsch") and elementary mathematics ("Mathematik") must be studied. One of these elements (a subject or a subject area) is studied as a major subject totalling 60 credit points. The other two elements each have a scope of 40 credit points. In addition, there are the educational sciences, also worth 40 credit points. If you want to become a teacher, you must follow this programme type with a Master of Education for primary school (G).
You can change your major subject in all semesters following enrolment. All you need to do is apply for this change by submitting the application for transfer to the student office by 15 November or 15 May. If you change your major subject during your Bachelor's degree programme, the current subject-related semester will be continued using the form for changing your major subject (PDF). An application for recognition and categorisation is not necessary. Special regulations may apply for BAföG recipients; please seek advice from the Studierendenwerk [Association for Student Affairs] before changing. If you change during the Master's programme, you must reapply for the M. Ed.; please refer to the BiSEd's information on access for external / other applicants.
Advice from the BiSEd is strongly recommended before applying to change a major subject in order to discuss any advantages and disadvantages that may arise.
