Saving energy at Bielefeld University

Use thermos jugs: Fill tea/coffee into a thermos, this protects the aroma and saves electricity.

Defrost refrigerator: defrost and maintain (seals) reduces electricity consumption.

Adjust refrigerator temperature: Please select the warmest setting of the refrigerator, usually 8 degrees Celsius - quite sufficient for food refrigeration.

Refrigerator usage: Often there is very little in the refrigerator. Consult with other users, a refrigerator may be unnecessary during the cold season. Every appliance that is turned off saves electricity.

Kettle filling quantity: Fill your kettle with the amount of water you really need. Often more water is heated than needed.

Decalcify kettle: Saves electricity when heating water.

Water boiler: You should only heat the water when it is really needed.

Window ventilation: Please always ventilate the windows and do not tilt them.

Heat circulation: Do not cover radiators with furniture or the like.

Heating off: If you do not need your office for several days, please turn off the radiator. To avoid having to forego comfort, someone from the team could turn up the radiator for you before you come into the office.

Move in between: Short exercise sessions in between ensure that we don't get so cold at the workplace. So move more often.

Please close the door: The temperature in the hallways is lower than in the office. So please close your office doors during the heating period, if possible, to keep the heat in the room.

Switch off completely: If possible, please turn off your PC including monitors and other electrical devices at the end of the working day. Inkjet printers should be an exception here, as there is a risk of them drying out if they are not used for a long period of time. In perspective, the goal should be to replace office printers with departmental printers.

Pause forshorter absences: By using the shortcut "Windows + L", you lock the PC and ensure that, on the one hand, you deny access to sensitive data and, on the other hand, that the system knows that you are currently not working and can put the monitor into energy-saving mode earlier than usual. A simple movement of the mouse will ensure that you can log back in and continue working where you left off.

Break during longer absence (e.g. lunch break): Please put the PC into energy saving mode. By clicking on "Start -> On/Off -> Energy saving mode" the system is switched off as far as possible and only consumes minimal amounts of energy. To wake up the PC from the energy saving mode again, you have to press the on/off switch of the PC and after the registration you can continue working where you left off before.

Activatepower management/energy saving functions on the PC (please no moving, colorful screen savers).

Screen brightness: Please reduce the brightness of your screen to a level that is comfortable for you - this saves a lot of energy. This also applies to smartphones/tablets.

Do not automatically start all devices immediately: perhaps peripherals are not needed until later in the day.

Printing: Please print only as much as absolutely necessary. Documents can also be printed double-sided and/or 2 on 1. In addition, it should be checked whether documents can also be used purely digitally.

Ask IT admin: Please contact your IT admin if you have any questions about your computer workstation.

Turnoff lights: Whenever possible, please turn off the office lights.

Take the stairs: Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Taking the stairs not only saves electricity, but also has a positive effect on your health.

Window ventilation: Please pay attention to shock ventilation - this way you get a good air exchange and save energy. The installed air cleaners additionally filter the room air, so that tilt ventilation is unnecessary.

Close doors and windows: Please close everything when leaving the room.

Lights off: Whenever possible, please turn off the lights.
