About the projekt

The project "open-access.network - Competence and networking platform in the field of Open Access 2" builds on the established and recognised platform open-access.network.

Using open and dialogue-oriented formats, the project aims to promote acceptance and implementation of the Open Access transformation in order to sustainably establish Open Access as the standard of scholarly publishing within the framework of Open Science in Germany.

The most important target group of the second funding phase are scientists and scholars, with the involvement of other stakeholders such as learned societies and private sponsors.

The project addresses current developments such as community-owned publication infrastructures and alternative funding models, publication based funding and "Diamond Open Access", subject-specific features of the Open Access transformation as well as criteria for research evaluation. The bundling of activities via the established open-access.network platform ensures that all offerings can be made available quickly, transparently and with a wide reach.

The main goals of the project are to support the Open Access transformation through comprehensive information, training and networking measures, the increased addressing of researchers, the development of re-usable materials and sustainably operated services.

Bielefeld University Library will focus on two main areas in the project:

a) the organisation of workshops and the production of handouts to support academic institutions to sustainably fund the Open Access transformation.

b) the maintenance and further development of the recommender service oa.finder, i.e. to include the segment of Open Access book publishers and conference papers.

About the project

In cooperation with the University Library of Regensburg and DESY Hamburg, existing information infrastructures such as the Electronic Journals Library and OpenAPC will be further developed and the role of repositories in the indexing of Open Access publication costs will be strengthened. The project focuses on the development of a standardised metadata format for the recording and transfer of data on publication costs publications, the realisation of an open interface for harvesting and querying this data.

The DFG project openCost aims to provide a comprehensive record of all costs for publications by scientific institutions. To this end, three focal points are being worked on:

  • Development of a standardised metadata format for the collection and transmission of data on the costs of publications.
  • Realisation of an open interface for harvesting and querying these data
  • Extension of the Electronic Journals Library (EZB) to include information on Open Access publication costs.

The project builds on and further develops existing information infrastructures such as the Electronic Journals Library and OpenAPC. The project organises thematic workshops and shares progress and results with scientific institutions and libraries in a public way.

About the project

Academic books, book chapters and monographs play an important role in scholarly production and communication, especially in the social sciences and humanities.

PALOMERA (Policy Alignment of Open Access Monographs in the European Research Area) investigates the phenomenon that books, book chapters and monographs in Open Access are often not the focus of Open Access policies of research funders and institutions compared to Open Access journal articles.

To this end, the project will conduct studies, surveys and interviews and develop concrete use cases. The knowledge gained will be processed in PALOMERA in a structured way and shared publicly. Based on the knowledge thus gained, PALOMERA will develop recommendations to support and coordinate an aligned policy for Open Access books. This is aimed at all relevant stakeholders, such as research funders, research institutions, publishers, infrastructure providers, libraries, national policy makers and, last but not least, researchers. This is linked to the overarching goal of accelerating the transformation to Open Access for books.

Bielefeld University Library is involved in building and analysing the knowledge base by integrating cost data from OpenAPC and book-related bibliographic metadata and statistics from BASE.
