Events for new doctoral researchers and academic employees

It's great to have you. Welcome event for doctoral researchers

Universität Bielefeld
(c) Universität Bielefeld

When you start your doctorate, new contacts are made: with supervisors, with colleagues in the working group and in the faculty, perhaps also with doctoral researchers in a research training group, in a graduate school or similar. The event "It's great to have you" offers the opportunity to talk to doctoral researchers who have all only been enrolled for a few months: whether for an individual doctorate or in a doctoral programme, at whichever of the 14 faculties - they are all doing their doctorate at Bielefeld University.

In "It's great to have you" you will get (1.) an overview of how many doctoral researchers are enrolled at the various faculties of Bielefeld University; (2.) a brief overview of services that are available to all doctoral researchers at Bielefeld University; and - above all - (3.) the opportunity to talk to doctoral researchers from various faculties and make contacts.

"It's great to have you" is offered once per semester. The event is held in English.

Dates and information on registration can be found in the PEP.

Good to know

Those who come to the university for a docotoral researcher or as a academic employee receive support from professors, secretarial staff and other direct colleagues at the chair, in the working group or in the respective Faculty. For onboarding, the event "Gut, zu wissen" (Good to know) also offers information for systematic orientation at the university.

In "Good to know" you will receive (1.) information on how to get off to a good start in teaching and research; and (2.) information on technical and organisational infrastructures, counselling centres, and continuing education programmes available at the university.

"Good to know" is offered once a month: in German and in English.

Dates and registration information are available in PEP.

The first steps towards the PhD. Techniques to organize your doctorate

Bielefeld University

This workshop for doctoral researchers in their first doctoral semester offers the opportunity to reflect on their own conditions, goals and plans: Under what conditions - financial, institutional, personal - do I want to do my doctorate? Under what conditions would I want to give up my doctoral project? What goals am I pursuing with my Phd? Are there side effects of doing a doctorate that I cannot tolerate? What steps would I like to take next towards Phd?

In the first half of the four-hour workshop, the participants first clarify conditions that are important to them in a possible doctoral process; and then the goals - possibly also: the unintended consequences - that they associate with doing a doctorate. In the second half, the participants recapitulate their work on the doctoral project in the past four weeks; and draft options for action and plans for the next four weeks.

The training is bilingual: participants can speak in German or English; listening in both languages is a prerequisite for participation.

Dates and registration information are available in PEP.
