Since 2005, Bielefeld University has offered its staff members a counselling service. This offer is open to employees and managerial staff at the University who seek counselling in times of personal difficulty or to deal with problems arising the workplace. It supports working groups and teams resolve conflicts in working relationships and advises those in leadership positions on questions concerning the management of staff.

The ‘Bielefelder Zertifikat für Hochschullehre’ [Bielefeld University Teaching Certificate[CAT1] ] is an in-house teacher training programme aimed at all researchers at Bielefeld University who are involved in university teaching. It offers an academically sound, practice-oriented qualification that is geared to the respective teaching contexts of the participants. During this programme you attend training courses on various topics of university teaching and visit and give feedback on other participant’s lectures and seminars. The programme’s focus is on developing and implementing your own teaching project and compiling a teaching portfolio to help you reflect on and document your own teaching experience. The training programme comprises three modules with a total of 200 work units. After successful completion of all modules, the ‘Bielefelder Zertifikat für Hochschullehre’ [Bielefeld University Teaching Certificate] is awarded, which corresponds to the nationwide standards for qualification in higher education.

There are various options for career counselling at the PhD & Postdoc Office at Bielefeld University.

Bielefeld University offers its teaching staff a counselling service where they can seek advice on individual concerns regarding the topic of teaching. In our counselling service for teaching staff, we support teachers with a confidential one-to-one consultation on their individual issues. In the coaching service for teachers, staff members can work on issues concerning their everyday teaching life over a longer period of time with the guidance of an external coach.

Every semester, BITS offers students and employees courses on common office applications, the statistical software SPSS and HTML. All courses can be booked via the electronic course catalogue. These courses are supplemented by a weekly "office consultation hour" organised by the BITS support service for employees/students.

All students and staff members of the University have access to LinkedIn Learning, an on-demand learning platform with online video tutorials. With over 14,000 video courses in 7 languages on many different topics from software, IT, design and business, LinkedIn Learning offers a wide range of content to support personal and professional development. The mentoring programme movement offers female students, doctoral candidates and post-doctoral researchers at Bielefeld University an environment that is conducive to their needs and where they can explore their career paths within a coordinated structure. The programme focuses on raising awareness of one’s own priorities, to develop sustainable career prospects and to identify appropriate strategies for action.
