The Interdisciplinary Centre for Health Literacy Research serves as the basis for an interdisciplinary network of research on health literacy and strengthens cooperation between the Faculties of Education and Health Sciences at Bielefeld University. In general, the ICHL has set itself the goal of becoming involved in both basic and applied research, of becoming a hub of the national health literacy debate in the long term, and of exploring further formats of interdisciplinary cooperation across universities and between universities.

In order to achieve this defined goal, existing collaborations and working groups were intensified, new collaborations were developed and networks and organisations were formed.

The Nationaler Aktionsplan Gesundheitskompetenz (NAP) is a central partner of the ICHL. The office of the NAP, which is located at the Hertie School, is the central contact point for all those who deal with the topic of health literacy: Actors and organisations from science and research, from politics and practice, from the health care system and self-help.

The ICHL and the NAP work closely together, especially in the following areas:

  • To identify existing studies and health literacy projects nationwide, to collect and process data and knowledge and to stimulate further research.
  • To network activities and actors with each other and to enable them to exchange experiences. Such cooperation will make it easier to bundle and coordinate existing activities and then, in a next step, to promote health literacy in a coordinated and multidisciplinary way.
