Participatory Research for Democratic Education

Participatory school research as well as democratic education have a long-standing (research) tradition at Bielefeld University and Laborschule Bielefeld. Over the course of the Erasmus project „LabSchoolsEurope“, both institutions are now also cooperating with partner institutions from England, France, the Czech Republic, and Austria.

The project LabSchoolsEurope focuses on the so-called „Laboratory Schools“ (in short „Lab Schools“). In the tradition of John Dewey these systematic cooperations between universities and schools, on the one hand, explicitly aim at providing democratic education for their pupils and, on the other hand, endeavour to strengthen the interrelation between school practice and university research.

Throughout the three-year project the partner institutions Bielefeld University, Laborschule Bielefeld, University of Cambridge Primary School, École des hautes études en sciences sociales, Lab School Paris, Masaryk University, Labyrinth Laboratory School Brno, University College of Teacher Education Vienna as well as Praxismittelschule und Praxisvolksschule Vienna are closely collaborating in regard to questions of democratic education, participatory school research and heterogeneity at primary level.
