In the WIKO project, the researchers of TRR 318 combine their work on AI explanations with science communication.
The aim is to strengthen the exchange between research and society and to sensitise people to a reflective approach to AI. The co-construction workshops, which are developed and carried out by the project team, take centre stage. In these workshops, participants enter into dialogue with AI systems themselves. They actively explore how AI works, where its limitations lie and how explanations need to be designed in an understandable way.
The approach specifically promotes what is known as XAI literacy, i.e. the ability to critically understand and categorise explainable AI.
Particular attention is paid to previously underrepresented groups.
In the long term, the concepts developed are to be transferred to education and training programmes in order to strengthen social participation in dealing with AI.
