About the Research Group
Directed by Prof. Dr. med. Sabine Oertelt-Prigione the research group is dedicated to sex- and gender-sensitive medicine.
People´s sex and gender impact their health and wellbeing. Sex and gender can also influence disease-associated symptoms and the effectiveness of medications. It is well established that the same condition may present and progress differently in women and men, and possibly gender-diverse people. These differences cannot be attributed solely to variations in body size; rather, they reflect more complex underlying factors. In addition to sex-related biological determinants, gender-associated differences in health behavior also play a significant role in access to healthcare, the choice of diagnostic and therapeutic options and quality of life of people. Therefore, incorporating sex and gender aspects into medical practice is essential for achieving individualized diagnosis and treatment.
For this reason, the group not only conducts research projects that integrate sex-informed and gender-sensitive perspectives in medicine, but also works on embedding gender-sensitive content into the medical curriculum. In doing so, it maintains close collaboration with numerous clinical disciplines.
Key areas of focus include the development of methods to assess “sex” and “gender” in clinical studies, the implementation of gender-sensitive approaches in clinical practice and prevention, and the design of innovative teaching concepts in gender-sensitive medicine.
