In the Alberta OWL cooperation, universities in OWL (Ostwestfalen-Lippe, Germany) and postsecondary educational institutions in Edmonton (Canada) work together to exchange and develop knowledge. The focus of the cooperation is on interdisciplinary close collaboration in research, as well as the exchange of students and trainees. Multilateral relations between all partners involved are intended to supplement, combine and expand the strengths of both regions.

Edmonton, with its 1.3 million inhabitants, is located in the heart of Alberta, Western Canada. With over 90,000 students annually, the city is an intellectual center. The renowned postsecondary educational institutions count among their notable alumni prime ministers and Nobel Prize laureates. Known as the "hotbed of knowledge and innovation", Edmonton is home to numerous excellent research facilities, biotech, agribusiness and oil companies. Among other things, the broad industry of information and telecommunications technology makes the city a perfect location for national and international business enterprises. The region is also a popular tourist destination due to its world-renowned Banff and Jasper National Parks in the Rocky Mountains. With about 40,000 students, the University of Alberta is the largest and oldest higher education institution in Edmonton. The comprehensive range of subjects offered by this research institution achieved top ratings in national and international rankings - TOP 6 in Canada according to the THE ranking. In more than 20 faculties and schools on 5 campuses, undergraduate, graduate, and targeted pre-employment programs are offered. MacEwan University is Edmonton's downtown metropolitan university offering a transformative education in a collaborative and supportive learning environment. The 19,000 students are divided into six faculties and schools: from Arts and Science to Fine Art and Communications, from Health and Community Studies to Continuing Education, from Nursing to Business. OWL - Partnering Science and Industry

With around 120,000 companies, Ostwestfalen-Lippe in northwestern Germany is a region with an industrial focus, in which business and science are closely connected. The collaboration of a wide variety of high-performance companies and universities makes OWL an important science location with more than 65,000 students. Internationality plays a central role here. Several so-called "hidden champions", big world market leaders, are based in OWL. The two largest cities Bielefeld and Paderborn complement each other in many ways.

Bielefeld University is a young research university with 24,000 students and more than 2,700 employees. With 115 subjects in humanities, natural sciences, social sciences and technology, Bielefeld University abides by the principle of interdisciplinary teaching and research according to the guiding concept of 'transcending boundaries'.

There are 6 English-taught master's courses and other international courses, such as double degree programs. The Cluster of Excellence in Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC), the Center for Biotechnology (CeBiTec), and the Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology (BGHS) are further international and interdisciplinary offers of the university.

With 20,000 students and more than 2,400 employees, Paderborn University is the second largest educational institution in OWL. Over 60 courses are offered in the 5 Faculties of Cultural, Economic and Natural Sciences, as well as Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics including Bachelor, Master and PhD programmes.

Presently, 9 internationally-oriented English master's programs are offered, in particular, in computer science, technical, engineering and natural sciences. Also many other courses contain significant international elements, in particular, the double-degree Bachelor in European Studies together with the Université du Maine, France. As a result, the number of international students is constantly rising.

Our academic staff includes ERC grant holder, Leibniz prize winners and other awardees performing excellent research with a strong focus on interdisciplinary. These activities span across all faculties and are supported by central research facilities, several externally-funded coordinated programs and also includes strong connections to companies of the area.

Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSBI) works closely together with industrial communities and businesses in the region, with regards both to teaching and applied research. HSBI has over 150 partnerships worldwide and is constantly expanding its international cooperations. Its 11,000 students are enrolled in over 60 degree courses across three campuses in Bielefeld, Gütersloh and Minden. With a choice of different study models, many degree courses (homepage in German) are offered in cooperation with local companies.

There are six faculties: Design, Minden Campus (Architecture, Engineering, Computer Science), Engineering and Mathematics, Social Sciences, Business, and Health.

The OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts (TH OWL) is a strong research university for applied sciences, which offers around 50 bachelor's and master's degree programs as well as doctoral programs at three locations. It is firmly anchored in Ostwestfalen-Lippe, a lively and economically strong region in the north-east of North Rhine-Westphalia. The TH OWL is creative, innovative and sustainable. It lives through the diversity of its departments, which are technically, economically, creatively and artistically oriented.
