X02: Creativity in morpho-lexical processing and learning

German provides language users with an easy means to be linguistically creative, by combining existing morphemes into novel words to express new concepts. X02 investigates the processing and learning of novel prefix and particle verbs (e.g., misslieben “to mislove”, aufschlafen “to sleep up”) and novel compounds (e.g., Kerzenbiene “candle bee”) in neurotypical adults. In particular, X02 focuses on meaning aspects, such as semantic plausibility and compositionality of complex novel words. Furthermore, the role of interindividual differences, such as speakers’ general creative ability, will be investigated. The project is further interested in the neural correlates of processing and learning novel complex words and to that end will employ electrophysiological measures in addition to behavioral measures.
