The Teacher-Training Programme
Bielefeld University’s teacher-training programme is characterised by its practice-based focus and educational innovation. It was one of the first universities in Germany to introduce practical teaching elements, and has integrated them more closely into the course curriculum. The two experimental schools in Bielefeld, the Laborschule (Laboratory School) and Oberstufenkolleg (High School College), have been a driving force for important initiatives in school reform for over 40 years.
The special and inclusive education programme, established in 2002 and unique in Germany, serves as a model for teacher training in the age of inclusion.

- Which teacher-training programmes can I study in Bielefeld?
Bielefeld University offers the following undergraduate degrees:
- Primary school
- Secondary and comprehensive schools (HRSGe)
- Advanced secondary and comprehensive schools
The teacher-training programmes for working in primary schools and secondary and comprehensive schools can be studied in combination with special and inclusive education. These study types are geared towards working in an inclusive school system. They are designed in such a way that after finishing a Master in Education in either primary education or HRSGe, the student can complete the additional Master’s degree with the particularly sought after special education areas of ‘learning’ and ‘emotional and social development’ in only two semesters.
- Which study components do I have to complete?
In the Bachelor's degree the chosen subjects and educational sciences must be studied. The combination of subjects is continued in the Master of Education, in which the practical semester is also completed. In order to meet the growing intercultural challenges in everyday school life, the module ‘German as a Second Language’ is also integrated into the Master's programme.
Students who, after completion of the teacher-training degree for Primary School (G) with Special and Inclusive Education, wish to go on to qualify as a teacher in special needs education in additional to their primary school teaching qualification, should complete a further one-year Master's programme which follows the Master of Education. The same applies to students who complete the teacher-training degree for Secondary school with special and inclusive education (HRSGe) and who, in addition, wish to work in the teaching profession in the area of special and inclusive education.
Following the Master’s Degree, there is an 18-month preparatory training period in a school setting (‘Referendariat’). This is solely under the supervision of the State Government (and without the involvement of the universities).
- How are the teacher-training options structured?
Grundschule
Bei diesem Studiengangstyp, einem auf den Lehrerberuf (Grundschule) ausgerichteten Typ, müssen ein Unterrichtsfach oder Lernbereich sowie die beiden Lernbereiche Sprachliche Grundbildung ("Deutsch") und Mathematische Grundbildung ("Mathematik") studiert werden. Eines dieser Elemente (ein Unterrichtsfach oder ein Lernbereich) wird als Schwerpunktfach im Umfang von 60 Leistungspunkten studiert. Die anderen beiden Elemente haben einen Umfang von jeweils 40 Leistungspunkten. Hinzu kommen die Bildungswissenschaften mit ebenfalls 40 Leistungspunkten. An diesen Bachelorabschluss muss dann ein Master of Education für diese Schulform angeschlossen werden.
Durch das Studium eines Schwerpunktfaches wird - mit Einschränkungen - ebenfalls der Wechsel in einen anderen Studiengangstyp ermöglicht. Wenn ein Wechsel angestrebt wird, ist eine vorhergehende Beratung dringend zu empfehlen.

Grundschule mit Integrierter Sonderpädagogik
In einem leicht veränderten Studiengangstyp (Bildungswissenschaften wird hier als Schwerpunktfach gewählt) ist im Bereich des Grundschullehramtes auch die weitere Spezialisierung auf Sonderpädagogik mit den Förderschwerpunkten "Lernen" und "Emotionale und soziale Förderung" möglich. Bei diesem letzten Typ wird ein passender Master of Education für das Lehramt an Grundschulen angeschlossen. Es muss dann aber für die Qualifikation im Rahmen der Sonderpädagogik noch ein weiteres (einjähriges) Studium an den Master of Education angeschlossen werden.

Haupt-, Real-, Sekundar- und Gesamtschule (HRSGe)
Der Studiengangstyp ist ebenfalls lehramtsbezogen, hier für das Lehramt an Haupt-, Real-, Sekundar- und Gesamtschulen (HRSGe). Dieser Studiengangstyp bietet die Anschlussmöglichkeit eines Master of Education für eine Tätigkeit als Lehrer/in an Haupt-/Real- und Gesamtschulen.
Interessierte Studierende können sich aber auch in Richtung Integrierte Sonderpädagogik spezialisieren und mit einem weiteren Master die Qualifikation für das Lehramt für sonderpädagogische Förderung erwerben. Dabei muss dann allerdings eines der gewählten Fächer Germanistik oder Mathematik sein und das andere Fach muss eines der folgenden sein: Anglistik, Biologie, Chemie, Evangelische Theologie, Germanistik, Mathematik, Physik oder Sportwissenschaft.
Im Aufbau lehnt sich dieser Typ ebenfalls an die bereits genannten Kombi-Bachelor-Modelle an. Ein Wechsel zwischen Studiengangstypen ist vor allem in den ersten Semestern möglich. Wenn ein Wechsel angestrebt wird, ist eine vorhergehende Beratung dringend zu empfehlen.

Gymnasium/Gesamtschule
Bei dem Studiengangstyp handelt es sich um einen Typ mit dem Ziel für ein Lehramt an Gymnasien und Gesamtschulen (GymGe). Ein Kernfach (90 Leistungspunkte) wird mit einem Nebenfach (60 Leistungspunkte) und Bildungswissenschaften (30 Leistungspunkte) kombiniert. Wer Lehrerin oder Lehrer werden möchte, muss an diesen Studiengangstyp einen Master of Education für das Lehramt an Gymnasien und Gesamtschulen anschließen.
Strukturell ist dieser Studiengangstyp mit der 1. Kombi-Bachelorvariante (Kernfach-Nebenfach-Kombination) vergleichbar. Ein Wechsel insbesondere zwischen diesen beiden Studiengangstypen ist vor allem in den ersten Semestern möglich. Changing the major subject
It is possible to change the major subject in any summer or winter semester ollowing enrolment. To do so it Is necessary to apply for this change by 15.11 or 15.05 at the Registrar’s Office using the application form. If you change during the Master's programme, you must reapply for the M.Ed. programme; please refer to the BiSEd (Bielefeld School of Education) information on access for external / other applicants.
Using the form to apply for a change in core subject, you will continue in your current assigned semester and there is no need to apply for recognition or classification of work completed. Special regulations may apply for BAföG (state funding) recipients; please seek advice from the Studierendenwerk (Association for Student Affairs) in this regard. It is strongly recommended that you seek advice before changing your major subject in order to discuss any pros and cons that may arise.
