With the handover of the first construction phase at the end of August, the university has until spring 2025 to fit out the newly renovated building section A/B of the main university building and at the same time clear the second construction phase for further refurbishment. Over the coming months, the new areas and rooms will gradually be fitted out and opened. Here is a brief insight into what students and employees can expect in terms of services and offers.
With over 1,000 seats, the Audimax is the largest Lecture Hall at Bielefeld University. It retains its proven concept and basic layout. The seating and updated presentation technology are new. The ventilation and building technology have also been modernised in accordance with current legal requirements.
The library will have a new entrance, which will become its central main entrance. This is the new location for the Library Service Centre (BDZ). The BDZ offers interdisciplinary information, training and advice on using the library as well as services relating to digital services, inter-library loan departments, loan accounts and library cards. In addition, 250 workstations will be available with a wide range of options for learning and working and the media collections for information science and sport will be directly accessible in open access. A cosy reading lounge with daily and weekly newspapers and magazines will invite you to linger.
The new BITS area combines media rooms, studios, makerspaces and PC pools and will offer modern technical equipment. It will be supervised by experts in the fields of IT, media and eLearning. The aim is to create an innovative and creative space for students, teaching staff, instructors, lecturers and other members of the university.
More information on the relocation of BITS to the new area can be found at: https://www.uni-bielefeld.de/einrichtungen/bits/services/themen/umzug-uhg-ab/
In future, services for students will be centralised near the main entrance. Here you will not only find first level support(BITS counselling), but also information on further counselling and support services on site(Infopunkt and Infopunkt International). There are also multifunctional co-learning spaces that can be used both as workplaces and event venues. As Bielefeld University's "calling card", the Student Service Centre is designed to welcome students and provide orientation.
Other services for students, such as the student office and Bafög office, are located in the immediate vicinity of the Student Service Centre.
Workstations for students will be departmentalised on various levels around the entrance area in part A/B of the building. In the immediate vicinity of the counselling and service offerings, students will have attractive opportunities to stay on site, work and learn together. For example, 250 workstations will be available in the library area, and around 100 additional workstations with IT support will be added in the BITS SPACE. A further 28 workstations will be available in the BITS-PC POOL.
A new cafeteria is being built in the main university building, operated by the Studierendenwerk [Association for Student Affairs]. The cafeteria with around 260 seats will be a place to meet and learn and will offer a varied range of food. Visitors can look forward to a daily fresh lunch menu, as well as snacks, fresh salads, fruit, cakes, sweets, coffee and coffee specialities. The cafeteria will replace the current offer in the Westend.
The new main entrance is now larger and more visible than before. The new building on the former car park on Universitätsstraße leads to the entrance. As soon as the partition wall is removed after the 2nd construction phase has been completed, the widened entrance staircase will lead directly into the university hall. The interior and exterior of the main university building will thus be more closely connected.
Symbol of conflict culture: the Chile mural from 1973. 16 metres wide and 4 metres high, the listed mural was specially protected during the renovation work. With its message and colour scheme, it brings a special accent to the newly renovated area.
