The rectorate manages the university. The rectorate is chaired by the rector, who represents the university externally. In addition to the rector, the rectorate is made up of four vice rectors with their own areas of responsibility and the chancellor. Five rectorate representatives also support the rectorate on strategically important issues.
The overarching goal of the rectorate is the strategic development of Bielefeld University into an individual and attractive academic location with a clearly recognisable character and academic profile. The various tasks within the rectorate serve to develop this profile.
The competences and responsibilities of the members of the rectorate and their representatives for their respective tasks can be found in the schedule of responsibilities (in German and only available to employees of the University).
Furthermore, the rectorate is committed to equality and diversity: It recognises the diversity of the people who work, study, teach and research at the university and sponsors their different skills, talents and competencies.
The rectorate is accountable to the University Council and the senate. Its members are elected by the university electoral assembly.
The rectorate is also a member of the State Rectors' Conference (LRK), which represents the interests of all sixteen universities in NRW.
