Gesellschaftliche Räume der Migration - Social Spaces of Migration (GeRäuMig)

Konflikte sind ein zentrales Element demokratischer Gesellschaften, da diese Gesellschaften auf der Grundidee des konstruktiven Aushandelns von Interessengegensätzen beruhen. Die Frage, wie gesellschaftliche Gruppen und ihre Mitglieder das Zusammenleben aushandeln, ist daher von besonderer Bedeutung. Für den Kontext von Migration ist die Aushandlung von Konflikten besonders relevant, denn Einwandernde treffen auf eine Gesellschaft, deren Erwartungen und Interessen an die ‚Migrant*innen‘ sie nicht zwingend teilen. Immigration ist ein Konfliktgeschehen.

Das GeRäuMig-Projekt betrachtet, wie sich migrationsbezogene Konflikte räumlich artikulieren und wie die Menschen vor Ort damit umgehen. Dabei wird untersucht, wie Wahrnehmung, Erfahrung und Thematisierung von Migration gesellschaftliche Räume schaffen und verändern sowie Ein- und Ausgrenzungsprozesse beeinflussen. Darüber hinaus wird in einem partizipativen Format mit Akteur*innen der lokalen Stadtgesellschaft erarbeitet, wie gesellschaftliche Räume gestaltet werden können, um einen konstruktiven Umgang mit Konflikten zu erreichen.

Vor diesem Hintergrund ist es das Ziel des Projektes herauszuarbeiten, wie Individuen und soziale Gruppen in Deutschland diese Konflikte wahrnehmen und bewältigen. Durch die Engführung auf Konflikte, die – direkt oder indirekt – auf Migration bezogen werden, ergeben sich für das Projekt spezifische Forschungsfragen:

Wie gehen Menschen mit lokal artikulierten Konflikten und Polarisierung um, wenn diese Konflikte konkret auf Migration bezogen sind oder medial-öffentlich auf Migration bezogen werden?
Welche Rolle spielen Räume für die Aushandlungen von Konflikten und Teilhabe in der Migrationsgesellschaft?
Wie müssen Räume in der Migrationsgesellschaft gestaltet sein, um Inklusion und einen konstruktiven Umgang mit Konflikten zu ermöglichen?

Conflicts are a central element of democratic societies, as they are founded on the fundamental idea of the constructive negotiation of conflicting interests. The question of how social groups and their members negotiate coexistence is therefore of particular importance. The negotiation of conflicts is particularly relevant in the context of migration, as immigrants encounter a society whose expectations and interests towards ‘migrants’ do not necessarily align with their own. Immigration is marked by conflict.

The GeRäuMig project examines how migration-related conflicts manifest spatially and how local people deal with them. It explores how the perception, experience and thematization of migration creates and changes social spaces and influences processes of inclusion and exclusion. Additionally, a participatory approach involving local urban actors will explore how social spaces can be designed to foster a constructive approach to conflict resolution. Therefore, the aim of the project is to explore how individuals and social groups in Germany perceive and manage these conflicts. By focusing on conflicts that are - directly or indirectly - related to migration, the project raises specific research questions:

How do people navigate locally articulated conflicts and polarization when these conflicts are specifically related to migration or publicly framed as migration-related in media?
What role do spaces play in negotiating conflicts and fostering participation in the migration society?
How should spaces in the migration society be designed to foster inclusion and a constructive approach to conflicts?
