Coscine

Coscine (Collaborative Scientific Integration Environment) is a web-based platform for managing and storing research data, developed by RWTH Aachen University. It offers structured data storage, metadata management and fine-grained access control. Up to 100 GB of storage is available per research project as standard. On request, the storage can be extended to up to 125 TB per project.

Scope of services

  • Storage and management of research data and associated metadata.
  • Fine-grained rights and access management at project and file level.
  • Support for various storage systems (e.g. DataStorage, S3-compatible storage).
  • Integration of metadata profiles for the structured description of data.
  • Project-based organisation and collaboration with multiple users.
  • Web-based access via single sign-on or ORCID.
  • Cross-university collaboration possible.
  • Up to 100 GB web storage for each research project. More storage possible on request.
  • High reliability thanks to geo-redundant storage in the state-wide DataStorage.nrw at several NRW locations (Aachen, Duiburg-Essen, Cologne, Paderborn).

Requirements

Target group

  • Researchers with an ORCID account or affiliation with Bielefeld University

Application

  • No separate application necessary

Application for additional storage

  • An account and a research project are required.
  • The application can be started here: https://jards.coscine.de/ There are three categories:
    • Web: Application is only necessary if the project requires more than 100 GB of storage.
    • S3: The data must then be managed with a client, which must be installed.
    • WORM: Stands for "Write Once, Read Many". This refers to archive systems that no longer allow data to be changed. Ideal for finished research projects where the data can no longer be changed but must be stored securely.
  • Assessment is carried out by the Competence Centre for Research Data and another RDM service point at a DH.NRW university.
  • Important:
An "S3 client" is required to access S3 and WORM. For this purpose, Filezilla should be installed by the responsible IT support.

Access

Costs

  • Free of charge for researchers from participating universities (including Bielefeld University)

Duty to co-operate

  • Maintenance of metadata
  • Management of access rights in the project

Regelungen zur Informationssicherheit

  • Storage on secure infrastructures (e.g. DataStorage.nrw)
  • Access via authentication systems (e.g. DFN-AAI, ORCID)
  • Additional measures (e.g. encryption) are required for particularly sensitive data
