On this page, students of the Faculty of Linguistics and Literature can find information about a possible semester abroad with Erasmus+. Most of the opportunities for stays abroad offered by our faculty are Erasmus+ cooperations.
For these, the application deadline for the following academic year (winter semester and summer semester) is the 31st of January.
The application deadline for the following academic year is always the 31st of January.
Applications can be submitted via the application portal "Mobility Online" from the beginning of January. Up to three universities of choice can be considered in the application. We make every effort to reply promptly afterwards.
Further information on the application procedure can be found on this page in the FAQs.
Our faculty holds more than 50 agreements with partner universities that allow students to participate in the Erasmus+ programme.

An application for an Erasmus+ study visit at one of our partner universities is only possible via the university's application portal "Mobility Online".
First, you have to register via the application form, which already asks for all relevant data for the application. Then you have to register in Mobility Online, which you will be asked to do automatically by e-mail after submitting the application form. Afterwards, personal data must be completed and the application documents uploaded. At our faculty, in addition to the obligatory documents, there is also the "Form for the universities of choice", which must be uploaded in the section "Other documents (optional)". This form is not optional.
The application is submitted via the application portal of the International Office.
The following documents must be uploaded here during the application process:
In addition, language certificates and similar documents can optionally be uploaded. Documents can also be uploaded. It may be useful to consult with the coordinator in charge beforehand whether an additional, necessary document needs to be uploaded.
Applications can be submitted in German or English.
In the case of applications for partner universities from the field of Romance Studies, it is requested that the letter of motivation be written in the language of the target country.
For the cooperation with Trinity College Dublin, it is requested that the letter of motivation be written in English.
Students are completely at liberty to write their motivation letter in any way they wish, but it should be about 1 page long. It should explain why the student has decided to study abroad and why they have chosen the stated preferences. In addition, it is advisable to explain in the letter of motivation how the chosen universities relate to the courses of study (in terms of content). It also makes sense to point out what in the courses offered by the universities of choice arouses your own interest. However, the coordinators may express wishes that deviate from this, so it is highly recommended to contact them before applying.
The Transcript of Records is the documentation of all achievements and grades obtained in the degree programme.
You can download your own current transcript of records in the eKVV under "Exam administration for students". To do this, select either "Performance overview by module" or "Performance overview by semester" in the examination administration. Then scroll down to the bottom and use the function Printout of your transcript of records.
If no achievements have been entered in the Transcript of Records yet, for example for students in their first semester, we ask that you create a complete overview of all courses attended and upload it instead of the Transcript of Records.
In the application portal, up to three desired universities are selected under "Details of stay".
The universities that can be selected here are determined by the prior specification of the field of study. Not all partner universities are listed for all degree programmes. In this case, please indicate the field of study in which the partner university can be selected.
If it is not possible to indicate all desired universities in one application due to this problem, up to two additional applications can be created and submitted. However, only up to three preferred universities per applicant can be considered; if more than three have been indicated, reference will be made to the "Form for the preferred universities" in the most recent application.
In principle, applications from students from other faculties are possible, but students from our faculty are given preference.
In this case, the interest should also be particularly justified in the letter of motivation and it should be explained how the stay abroad fits into the individual course of studies.
Congratulations on your nomination! There are several steps to be taken in the coming weeks and months. First, the nomination must be confirmed in the Mobility Online Portal. Only then can the International Office contact you and confirm the nomination.
At the latest six weeks before departure, the Online Learning Agreement (OLA) must be completed. It must then be confirmed by both coordinators in Bielefeld and at the partner university. Please allow for possible processing times and absences, we recommend around two weeks so that everything is ready in time. If you have any questions about the process, you can contact the coordinator in charge.
You must also arrange your own accommodation in advance, although some universities offer support in this regard. Not all universities offer the possibility of living in a student hall of residence. The International Office is responsible for questions regarding this.
At Bielefeld University there is a set procedure for the recognition of credit, more information on this can be found at here.
In principle, recognition is based on the learning agreement agreed in advance.
During the Erasmus+ stay, a scholarship is paid, the amount of which depends on the country of the stay.
Group 1 - 600€ per Month:
Group 2 - 540€ per Month:
Group 3 - 490€ per Month:
There are also various additional funding opportunities in the Erasmus+ programme, for example for sustainable travel and students who are first-time graduates. For more information, see the International Office.
An internship abroad can also be funded through the Erasmus+ programme. At our university, the International Office is responsible for this; more information can be found here. For an internship, the application for funding should be submitted to the International Office at least six weeks before the start. The amount of the scholarship is also based on the country of the stay, but is additionally funded with 150€ per month. Erasmus+ internships are available in all countries of the European Union and third countries associated with the programme (Northern Macedonia, Serbia, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Turkey).
