Dr Birte Richter is a laboratory manager and research associate in the Medical Assistance Systems working group at the OWL Medical School at Bielefeld University. She conducts research on the participatory development and evaluation of intelligent assistance systems, human-technology interaction and the modelling of attention in adaptive dialogue systems.
After studying computer science, she completed her doctorate in the interdisciplinary Intelligent Systems programme at Bielefeld University in 2021. In her doctoral thesis, she developed the Attention-Hesitation Model, a non-intrusive intervention strategy for incremental dialogue management in smart home and robotic systems. Her Master's and Bachelor's theses already dealt with multimodal emotion expressions and dialogue-based interaction systems for service robots.
From 2011 to 2019, she worked at the Faculty of Technology and the Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC). She played a key role in third-party funded projects, including the large-scale DFG project Cognitive Service Robotics Apartment as Ambient Host (CSRA), in which she developed the dialogue system of an intelligent smart home. Her work included setting up the smart home, developing the dialogue pipeline and conducting interaction studies. She also developed dialogue systems for the BMBF project KogniHome - the thinking home and worked on human-robot interaction studies in the DLR project SoziRob.
She has been working at the Medical School OWL since 2021 and has been Head of the Laboratory for Medical Assistance Systems since 2024. She is an associate member of TRR 318 - Constructing Explainability and supervises PhD students in the fields of AI-supported explanatory systems and attention control. She also led the RADIUSFLEX project as Principal Investigator to support outpatient psychotherapy for adolescents.
In addition to her research, she is a member of the CITEC - Cognitive Interaction Technology Scientific Advisory Board and the Commission for Research and Development of the Medical School OWL.
