At Bielefeld University, instruction in sex- and gender-sensitive medicine begins as early as the first semester with an introductory lecture on the topic. As the curriculum progresses, sex- and gender-sensitive content is taught across various modules in a cross-disciplinary manner and through repeated reinforcement in line with the learning spiral. In addition to the various lectures and seminars throughout the entire curriculum, a specific module on sex- and gender-sensitivity and inclusive medicine spanning 30 hours is mandatory for all medical students in the 3rd, 4th or 5th semester (depending on rotations). Lectures cover, for example, scientific thinking and practice, basics of sex- and gender sensitive clinical medicine, sex- and gender aspects in immunology, gender- and queer-sensitive communication, intimate partner violence, gender-sensitive prevention, the risks and challenges of digital innovation and AI for sex- and gender-sensitive topics or (in collaboration with the faculty of history and philosophy of medicine) intersectionality.
