Teaching and learning formats in clinical thinking and acting

Clinical thinking and action in medical studies is a crucial part of the training of future doctors. Various forms of practical experience are taught during the degree programme in order to give students a broad insight into medical practice and improve their practical skills.

Teaching staff, instructors, lectures sitting on the floor and bending over a medical manikin on which they demonstrate a cardiac massage to the students, who are also sitting on the floor.

While the thematic block modules focus in particular on the development of specialist skills, the longitudinal strand Clinical Thinking and Action in Practice focuses in parallel on the students' ability to act. Here, students are primarily trained in practical skills and abilities that are important for practising medicine - for example, physical examination techniques and communication skills. In addition, the modules on clinical thinking and acting in practice link the students' knowledge skills acquired in the corresponding thematic block module with specific areas of clinical application. This creates a link between theoretical and practical skills, as required in clinical medical practice. Various teaching and learning formats are necessary for the acquisition of skills (e.g. problem-based learning (POL), interprofessional formats, simulations, teaching on patients).

In these modules, students are also actively encouraged to engage with their individual skills development, constructive-critical thinking and the need for lifelong learning. This also includes reflecting on their own medical roles, which students learn to recognise and take on during the course of the programme. This development process is accompanied by a mentoring system and a skills logbook.

Overall, Clinical Thinking and Action in the medical degree programme offers students the opportunity to put theory into practice and improve their practical skills. By combining different forms of practical training, students can gain comprehensive experience and prepare themselves for their future work as doctors.
