Overview of the functions

  • Receiving warning messages on the campus premises
  • Receiving behavioural instructions
  • Retrieving information/emergency tips
  • Retrieve location plans (e.g. defibrillators, company paramedics)
  • Sending a personal emergency number (by telephone)
  • Sending a personal SOS message (SMS)

1. Receiving warning messages for the Campus Bielefeld University

Once you have installed the crisis and emergency app, you can receive warnings about certain hazardous situations that occur on the university campus. You will receive a push-up notification on your smartphone as soon as the warning is announced.

The warnings are only received within a 1 km radius of the Bielefeld University campus (geofencing). As soon as you leave the campus grounds within a distance of 1 km, you will no longer receive any alerts.

In addition to the acoustic alarm (e.g. in the event of a fire), the app is to be regarded as an additional signalling channel.

2. Receiving instructions

Instructions that must be observed in the event of an incident are also issued with a warning message (e.g. use of certain escape routes, leaving buildings as a matter of principle). As soon as further information is available or the event has ended, updates and information on how to proceed is communicated (e.g. false alarm of the fire alarm system; building can be re-entered).

3. Retrieval of information/emergency tips retrieval of site plans

In the "Information" section, you will find advice and recommendations on how to prepare for certain events (e.g. fire incidents, accidents, amok or terrorist situations) and how to behave in a dangerous situation. Telephone numbers can be called directly from the documents. Simply tap on the telephone number given in the document and then confirm the extension.

4. Retrieval of site plans

In the "Maps" section, you will find site maps with important emergency facilities (e.g. locations of defibrillators, location of the University Medical Service, assembly points in case of fire).

5. Making an emergency call/SOS

The emergency number button connects you directly to Bielefeld University's Central Control Room by telephone (available 24 hours a day). The Central Control Room will then immediately initiate the necessary reporting chain (e.g. request for an ambulance, instruction within the building). The Central Control Room has an automatic call forwarding function to 112 if the Central Control Room cannot be reached due to extraordinary circumstances.

You can use the SOS button to send an SMS, which is also received by the Central Control Room. Please note: The emergency number and SOS button only works within a 1km radius of Bielefeld University. Outside this radius, the usual emergency number 112 or 110 must be dialled.

As soon as a local hazard situation on campus becomes known, Bielefeld University's crisis team (defined group of people) will issue warnings to the best of their knowledge and belief. In addition to the warning about the hazardous situation (e.g. fire incident, evacuation of the building, hazardous substance accident, use of weapons), further relevant information and instructions on how to behave are communicated if necessary (e.g. leave the building immediately, false alarm; building can be re-entered, do not leave the building).
Important: Do not rely exclusively on the messages in the app, but also pay attention to other communication channels such as the acoustic alarm in the building, loudspeaker announcements or other sources of information from the university (e.g. email). Since a dangerous situation can change and escalate very quickly, the instructions of authorities and organisations with security tasks (police, fire brigade) on site must always be followed, even if there is no corresponding information in the app!
To receive the warnings, you should activate the push notifications. You will then receive the message immediately after a warning has been sent. This way you will be informed promptly about relevant events and dangers. Your smartphone requires an active data connection for this. If push notifications are switched off. You must manually update the notification details to recognise whether there are any alerts. As soon as a hazardous situation has passed, you will usually be informed accordingly via the app.
The same applies here; also pay attention to other communication channels on site (all-clear by loudspeaker announcements or direct contact, e.g. by the police).
