Studies in linguistics and second language acquisition research show the various difficulties international students have in writing academic texts (e.g. seminar papers) in the foreign language German despite excellent language skills. In order to adequately fulfil the academic and linguistic demands placed on student qualification papers, various self-organisational, academic, linguistic and discursive skills are required. In particular, ignorance of scientific textual standards can lead to serious "errors" and thus to a negative assessment or rejection of a student research project.

In order to prevent such problems and to support international students in fulfilling the writing requirements, more and more counselling services on academic writing in German as a foreign language are being offered by GFL graduates. One of the most effective forms of intervention is individual one-to-one counselling, which responds very specifically to a given text product and the individual questions and difficulties of the person writing in German as a foreign language.

Against this background, this seminar is aimed primarily at advanced students of German as a foreign language (Master's, Magister) whose appointment is to work in the preparation or support of international students at home or abroad. The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the above-mentioned form of text feedback from different perspectives (theoretical and practical).

Based on the students' own writing experiences and texts, the linguistic foundations for the assessment of academic texts and, building on this, the basics of subject-related and linguistically appropriate writing counselling for international students will be developed.

In the compulsory, final practical phase of the seminar, the knowledge and skills acquired will be applied: All participants take on the individual counselling of international students in writing or linguistically revising seminar papers as part of the PunktUm project (offering "text feedback and error correction").

Target group and general conditions

Desired prerequisites for participation: If possible, you have attended seminars on the topics of "specialised/academic language" or "errors and error correction" in the course of your GFL studies. Please bring two seminar papers to the first session that you have written during your studies in your major or minor subject.

As part of the multiplier training programme on lecturing and writing academic texts in German as a foreign language, we want to take a theoretical and practical look at the subject of lecturing and writing in German as a foreign academic language - problem areas and possible solutions . The event will focus on the following questions in line with the questions and interests of the participants:

  • What is the difference between writing in a foreign language and writing in L1?
  • What specific problems arise when speaking and writing in German, a foreign academic language?
  • What concepts and materials can be used to teach and practise the necessary language knowledge and skills?
  • How do you plan target group-orientated courses?

Overall, the seminar is designed to be application- and practice-orientated. After developing the theoretical foundations, existing concepts will be tried out, further developed and critically reflected upon in the practical phase of the seminar.

Target group and general conditions

This seminar is an additional offer of the subject German as a Foreign Language and is aimed at students (Magister, Master) and doctoral students of German as a Foreign Language at Bielefeld University.

The seminar comprises a total of 5 SWS, the number of participants is limited. The basics are worked on in block courses (2 SWS), plus the practical phase (3 SWS), in which a total of 4 workshops per participant are carried out in team teaching. The practical phase extends over 2 semesters.
