COIL stands for Collaborative Online International Learning and describes an innovative teaching and learning method in which students and teaching staff from different countries work together digitally in international groups.
COIL elements can be integrated into existing events or offered as stand-alone projects. Both individual collaborative sequences and longer collaborations are possible. Depending on the collaborative goal, students work together either within their department or on an interdisciplinary basis. It is important to clarify the organisational framework conditions, such as the working language, the language level of the participants and a reliable digital infrastructure.
COIL elements follow a didactic structure and comprise several phases:
COIL combines the advantages of digital teaching and learning formats with international networking. In addition to teamwork, students benefit from intercultural exchange, regardless of mobility and financial resources. Cooperative and digital elements offer variety and open up new perspectives. Students also acquire practical skills for their future appointments, especially in virtual collaboration and international communication.
COIL enables teaching staff to collaborate not only internationally but also interdisciplinarily and opens up new perspectives for teaching and research. By using digital formats and engaging with different academic cultures, didactic, technical and intercultural skills are further developed. At the same time, COIL offers a sustainable and resource-saving approach to the internationalisation of teaching.
Teaching staff who would like to implement a COIL project receive support with didactic planning and implementation as well as the selection of suitable platforms and tools.

How can I work with the Teaching Canvas?
In the Teaching Canvas, teachers can record their thoughts on key questions relating to the planning and implementation of courses. The Canvas thus supports teachers in preparing their teaching and at the same time invites dialogue between students and teachers on how they can shape learning and teaching together. The focus lies on student collaboration and participation in courses.
