British Studies
In teaching and research, the British Studies section engages with anglophone literatures and cultures from Great Britain and from around the world, especially the Caribbean, Southern Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Focussing on the centuries from the Renaissance to the present, we analyse a broad range of primary materials, i.e. ‘texts’ in the widest sense of the term, including the classical literary genres of poetry, drama and prose as well as non-fiction, historical documents, graphic novels, cartoons, paintings, films, TV series and digital media. Pursuing a cultural studies approach, we read creative products and cultural phenomena alongside and against their social, political, economic and historical contexts. The discussions are informed by a keen awareness of literary and cultural studies theories and methods.
