The examination office of the Medical School OWL is part of the Department of Studies and Teaching and is the central point of contact for students and examiners for examination matters.

Student gets advice from a member of staff in front of a screen.

Our tasks

The staff at the examination office advise students on all questions relating to examination matters according to their individual study programme. We are happy to take short enquiries by phone or email, for longer discussions please make an appointment during office hours.

We accept registrations for examinations, register cancellations and announce admissions to examinations.

The examination office transfers the results from the examiners' performance reports to the BIS examination management system and thus to the students' transcripts. We will provide you with a personal transcript on request.

After the third or at the latest during the fourth semester, the educational institution must check the performance status of BAföG recipients, to which the continuation of funding is linked. BAföG recipients should contact the examination office with a form(Form 5, 05 Leistungsbescheinigung nach § 48 BAföG) to provide proof. The level of performance is checked on the basis of the proven credit points and, if the limit is not reached, on the basis of the recorded passed study and examination achievements.

Based on 75% of the usual academic achievements after the

a) 3rd subject related semester: 72 Credit points or 19 examinations and 23 study requirements / credits

b) 4th subject related semester: 95 Credit points or 26 examination requirements / credits and 32 study requirements / credits

must be demonstrated.

Students who are also aiming for a degree in the Bachelor's programme "Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences" should contact the examination office for advice.

Differences between lateral entry candidates, lateral entry students and university transfer students for the recognition of study and examination credits

Would you like to study medicine and are unsure whether you are a lateral entry candidate or a university transfer student? Don't worry, we'll explain the difference first.

A university transfer student was already enrolled in a human medicine degree programme at another university and would like to change their place of study.

A lateral entry candidate, on the other hand, has previously studied a non-subject-related degree programme, e.g. biology or chemistry, and would like to switch to medicine.

The difference is therefore that lateral entry candidates, lateral entry students, lateral entry teachers (depending on the context) enter a new area of expertise, while university transfer students continue their academic education at another university.

Recognition of study and examination credits for university changers:

If you have already completed coursework and examinations in a medical degree programme at another university, you can contact the Medical Examination Office at Bielefeld University directly as your first point of contact.

To be placed in a higher subject related semester of the model degree programme in Medicine, please submit the completed application, your transcript and proof of your first aid course.

Recognition of study and examination achievements for lateral entry candidates, lateral entry teachers (depending on the context):

If you would like to apply for the model degree programme in Medicine as a lateral entry candidate, there are certain steps you need to take to have your coursework and examinations recognised:

  1. Please first contact the relevant state examination office to have your examination and study requirements / credits recognised and check their website for information on the documents to be submitted there. To find out which state examination office is responsible for you, please refer to the information sheet on the website of the State Examination Office for Medicine, Psychotherapy and Pharmacy (Forms and Information, Information Sheet Human Medicine).
  2. As soon as you have received your letter of recognition, please contact the Medical Examination Office at Bielefeld University.

Placement in a higher subject related semester

The model degree programme in Medicine at Bielefeld University differs from regular degree programmes in its different structure, content focus and interdisciplinary orientation. Among other things, there is no separation into pre-clinical and clinical study sections. Instead, clinical study content is already started in the first semester. This can make it much more difficult to have courses recognised and to design an individual timetable.

Please note that partial recognition of academic achievements is not possible in accordance with § 4 (4) of the study and examination regulations for the model degree programme in Medicine.

All information on recognition, crediting and grading can be found here.

An explanation of the application, classification and enrolment in a higher subject-related semester can be found here.

As a rule, the following certificates are required for a possible placement:

  • Internship in Biology for Physicians or Internship in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology
  • Chemistry practical course for medical students
  • First aid certificate
  • Practical course in medical terminology
  • Seminar or course in medical psychology and medical sociology
  • Practical course in career exploration or practical course for introduction to clinical medicine

Further academic achievements determine whether a placement in a higher subject related semester is possible.

You can find the application for recognition here. Incomplete applications for recognition will not be processed.
