Application for a higher subject related semester

An application/enrolment for a higher subject-related semester is possible if you have already studied. The following cases are possible:

Change of university

Are you currently enrolled at another university and would like to transfer to Bielefeld University?

➥ Apply to us for a higher subject related semester in the same degree programme or subject.

Have you previously been enrolled and would like to resume your studies after an interruption?

➥ Apply to us for a higher subject related semester in the same degree programme or subject.

You were not previously enrolled in the new degree programme, but can be enrolled in a higher subject related semester due to creditable study requirements / credits (from the old / previous degree programme or subject)?

If you are not yet enrolled in the degree programme / subject at Bielefeld University, you must first submit an application. For lateral entry into a higher subject-related semester, you will also need a placement notice stating how many semesters will be credited. You will receive this notification from the relevant Faculty at Bielefeld University.

If you want to start a degree programme and cannot enrol in the first subject-related semester due to the NC (admission restrictions), you may be able to improve your chances of a study place and enrolment by having your previous academic achievements recognised and being placed in a higher subject-related semester.

Exclusion period

Applications for placement in a higher subject related semester must be submitted
  • for the winter semester by 15 August (subjects with NC) or 15 October (subjects without NC) at the latest
  • for the summer semester by 15 February (subjects with NC) or 15 April (subjects without NC) at the latest

Study places in higher subject-related semesters are allocated in a ranking order as set out in Section 34f of the Ordinance on the Allocation of Study Places in North Rhine-Westphalia (see legal basis). Parallel to the application for a higher subject-related semester, it is possible to apply for the first subject-related semester of the same degree programme/subject. When applying for the first subject-related semester, please note the earlier deadline for applications and the lottery.

If you are applying for a higher subject related semester in the Master of Education programme, please note that this is only possible within the application deadlines . Applications can only be made via the corresponding application and status portal.

Please read the information on approval for the Master of Education before submitting your application.

Applicants with a foreign certificate of education should follow the special instructions and send their application directly to Bielefeld University. A VPD issued by uni-assist is generally required for undergraduate programmes (Bachelor's degree/ 1st examination/ state exam(ination)).

Bachelor courses with admission restrictions

  • Biochemistry
  • Psychology
  • Law and Management

State exam(ination) degree programmes with admission restrictions

  • Medicine

Applicants for the degree programme Medicine are requested to contact the Medical School OWL before submitting their application.

Master's degree programmes with admission restrictions

  • Applied psychology: diagnostics, counselling and training

  • Clinical psychology and psychotherapy

  • Psychology with a focus on experimental psychology and neuroscience

If your chosen degree programme/subject is subject to admission restrictions in higher subject-related semesters, an application is required.

Please use the application and status portal (only active during the corresponding application period).

The following documents must be uploaded within the deadline for applications:

  • in thecase of a change of university in the Bachelor's programme/ 1st examination/ state exam(ination): Certificate of enrolment from the current or previous university stating the degree programme and semester of study;
  • in the case of lateral entry, only a placement certificate from the respective Faculty of Bielefeld University stating how many semesters of creditable study requirements / credits have been completed (the certificate from the Faculty does not entitle the applicant to a study place).

If your chosen degree programme/subject is not subject to admission restrictions in higher subject-related semesters, you can enrol directly at Bielefeld University.

Please note, however, that you must also apply for courses offered without admission restrictions via the application and status portal. Furthermore, for higher subject-related semesters, it is essential that you are classified by the respective department. After completing the placement procedure, you will receive a placement letter from the department, which you must upload as part of the enrolment procedure.

Study applicants with a foreign certificate of education please note the special instructions and send your application documents either to Uni-Assist (Bachelor) or directly to Bielefeld University(Master/PhD studies).
