In transregio 211, researchers from theoretical physics, cosmology and nuclear physics come together to conduct research on the fundamental properties of strongly interacting matter in order to apply these findings to the physics of ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions and the early universe. Further collaborative partners include TU Darmstadt and Goethe University Frankfurt.

In this broad field, the university has positioned itself with a focused profile at the interfaces between physics, chemistry, biology and bioinformatics, clearly visible nationally and internationally. The current focus of research ranges from nanosheets, single molecule processes and chemical reactions to bacterial, plant and animal cells as well as populations of organisms to cosmology and particle physics. This focus is characterized by a high degree of interdisciplinary collaboration, especially at the Center for Biotechnology (CeBiTec) and the Bielefeld Institute of Nanoscience (BINAS). Top-level basic research is conducted, for example, in the Transregio Collaborative Research Centre "Strong-Interaction Matter under Extreme Conditions", in the German Network for Bioinformatics Infrastructure (de.NBI), and in the International LOFAR Telescope (ILT) Consortium. In addition, this main research area includes high-profile industrial collaborations, e.g. with the companies E.ON, Evonik Industries, ZEISS and Siemens.
