Bielefeld University is a member of the NEOLAiA network, an association of nine young, dynamically developing university institutions in various European regions beyond the metropolises. NEOLAiA wants to create an open and inclusive educational and social environment to support equity at the university and in European society as a whole with a regional focus.

Bielefeld University maintains close cooperation with the traditional Italian university, in particular in the area of double degrees.
The Università di Bologna with around 87,500 students is Europe’s oldest university. In addition to its unique historical tradition, it has been a leader in internationalisation for centuries. More than 6,700 international students attend the highly ranked university in the historical city centre. The alma mater is one of the 100 best universities of history world-wide. In excess of 210 degree programmes at the university in the regional capital provide a diverse and exciting range of courses.
EditA number of exchange cooperations is available with the renowned university in Japan; students from all faculties in particular can go to Japan for language acquisition.
EditUniversities in OWL (Ostwestfalen-Lippe, Germany) and educational institutions in Edmonton (Canada) work together to exchange and develop knowledge in the Alberta-OWL cooperation. The cooperation focuses on close interdisciplinary collaboration in research, as well as on student and intern exchange. Multilateral relations between all partners involved complement, combine, and build on the strengths of both regions.
Bielefeld University and the Universidad de Guadalajara have been engaged in intense cooperation in the form of student exchanges, as well as lecturer and researcher exchanges, since 2005. The option of a double degree in the MA InterAmerican Studies with the Maestría en Literaturas Interamericanas was introduced in the winter semester 2018/19, for example. Another option is the ISAP (International Study Partnership Program). Both partners play coordinating roles in the German-Latin American research centre in the social sciences and humanities, the Merian Center for Advanced Latin American Studies (CALAS), which has been established since 2017 and is funded by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung.Edit
