Web authentication with Shibboleth

What is Shibboleth used for?

To enable students and employees of Bielefeld University to access services of certain external providers and protected web content, BITS operates the authorization and authentication service Shibboleth.
Likewise, students access the services eKVV, examination administration, learning spaces and the university portal with the password (web password) in combination with the matriculation number.

How does Shibboleth work?

When logging in to the service of an external provider (Service Provider, SP), you will first be redirected to the login website of Bielefeld University (Identity Provider, IdP). There you have to enter your personal university login data, which will be checked by the IdP. If the login is successful, the SP checks whether access to the service is granted based on the transmitted user data (no passwords).
The services are operated within the federation of the DFN (DFN-AAI) in order to comply with uniform guidelines.

What data is transmitted?

When using a connected service for the first time, you will be asked whether you want to transfer the listed user data to the SP. If one has agreed and would like to reverse the decision, the option "Revoke attribute release for this service" must be checked at the next login.

Access data

To log in to the services listed above, the BITS username or matriculation number/UniID and the web password are required. As a rule, this is the password that is also valid for the PRISMA portal.

Initial password for students:
The BITS password from the confirmation of enrollment.
Initial password for employees:
The password from the UniCard letter.

Change password

The web password can be changed via the PRISMA portal.

Web password for eKVV and Co.

As of March 15, 2019, the web authentication password is also used for special services for students. Thus, the previous, separate eKVV password has been replaced.
Students use the matriculation number and the web password to access the following services:

• eKVV
• Learning spaces
• Exam administration
• Application and status portal
