Personal account

In order to use the full range of services offered by the Bielefeld IT Service Centre (BITS), an account is required. The activation is different for students and employees (see below).

Depending on the service, different access data (login names and passwords) are required.

Scope of services

An account can have several accounts for the various IT services. The PRISMA central identity management system( is used to create and manage accounts.

Enrollment automatically unlocks access to the IT services. In order to use the BITS services, the BITS login name is used. The personal user name and the university e-mail address are stored in the PRISMA portal under "My data".


Where are my access data for PRISMA?
This data can be found on the confirmation of provisional enrollment or in the welcome e-mail from This e-mail will be sent when the transfer of the semester fee has been booked. With the matriculation number and the BITS password you can log in at

An account with the standard accesses for Active Directory (PC login, e-mail) and network access (WLAN, VPN) is automatically created. At some faculties, separate authorizations are also required.

New employees receive the access data for the PRISMA portal with their UniCard letter. There, the BITS user name and the personal e-mail address, for example, can be viewed.

If you have any questions about setting up or using the account, the respective IT supervisor of the faculties and departments will be happy to help.

External users/guests should contact the host faculty/department for an account. The persons to contact there must contact their own IT supervision for the account creation (see Support).

Account validity

Upon leaving the university, the account expires after 6 months for students and employees. This also includes access to the e-mail address, including forwarding from this address.

Change password

Passwords are managed via the PRISMA portal.

Password forgotten

Via the link"Forgotten your password?" link on the PRISMA portal, a new initial password for PRISMA can be sent by e-mail.


Change call name

In the PRISMA portal, it is possible to set a call name as the first name. This can be done, for example, if a double name is entered in the master data, but only one of them is to be displayed in university-wide portals/systems.
