SimpleVM

Fast, uncomplicated VM from the private cloud

Provision of short-term and non-permanent computing power for researchers at Bielefeld University.

The SimpleVM service is currently still a prototype. We are not yet able to meet every need. Please contact us if you are interested.

Scope of services

Compute

Do you need calculations with Python, AI or GPUs, but lack the infrastructure?

At DSI, we have a number of CPUs and GPUs that can be booked for a limited period of time (can be extended for a maximum of three months). Instead of cost-intensive workstations, VMs can be provided here that enable convenient computing via the browser. The VMs are highly customisable and allow you to run your own installations and code.

RStudio

Calculations too big for your own laptop?

Instead of your own workstation, we can quickly provide a virtual machine (VM) that can be easily accessed via the browser. After a login, the VM starts with RStudio, which you can then work with. You can easily install the required plug-ins yourself.

There are no costs involved. However, the VM should only be used when it is needed so that the resources can be made available to others.

Seminar function

Do you want to work with RStudio in courses, but the pool computers are not fast enough? Do the students need too long to customise the installation?

With the seminar function, a prepared image can be loaded onto other VMs for the duration of the course so that students do not have to make their own configurations. All participants can use their working environment directly via the browser. The machines can be removed again after the event.

Requirements

Target group

  • Employees (researchers)
The project owner must be a researcher at Bielefeld University.

Application

The use of SimpleVM (DSI) can be applied for informally via dsidevsupport@uni-bielefeld.de. The e-mail should contain the following information:

  • What is planned?
  • What is needed?
  • How long will it be needed?

If this is not technically transparent at the moment, we will be happy to advise you.

Provisioning times

1 working day from commissioning.

Duty to co-operate

Pause/deactivate resources when they are not required.

Data protection

The environment is currently only suitable for data with normal protection requirements

A distinction is made between normal, high and very high protection requirements. Which category the data falls into depends on its confidentiality, integrity and availability requirements. The template for categorising data can be downloaded here.
