AG 2: Department of Population Medicine and Health Services Research
The teaching and research field of Global Health adds an interdisciplinary and global dimension to the classical aspects of international health, much of which focuses on infectious diseases. It deals with health and the social, economic, political and cultural influences that cross national borders and thus have supraterritorial effects. More information...
In today's fast-moving and globalising world, there is an immense need for scientific evidence among decision-makers in politics and social systems. Dynamic political events and developments often lead to the tendency or need for rapid decisions and responses.
The Department of Population Medicine and Health Services Research (AG 2) pursues the goal of synthesising timely and policy-oriented evidence on selected topics in order to inform political decision-making processes. More information...
In a society that is increasingly multifaceted, diverse and potentially divisive, questions of social inequity and its impact on health and medical care arise. With a primary focus on the social determinants of health, our studies include analyses of health services and health care needs, epidemiological issues related to the burden of disease, and access to health care for disadvantaged population groups compared to the wider population. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the greatest global health challenges of our time. As such, it has a high priority in German and global health policy. Increasing antibiotic prescribing and use in health care and agricultural is making more and more pathogens resistant to antibiotics. This resistance promotes the spread of various pathogens in the healthcare system, the general population and, ultimately, the environment as a whole. More information...
Research in the field of migration, including forced and refugee migration, focuses on the causes, conditions and consequences of refugees and on application-oriented analyses of health policy measures at national, European and global level. From the point of view of population medicine, screening measures and their effectiveness, questions on the burden of disease, access to care and prevention measures, and the responsiveness of health systems are of great importance in an international comparison. A central research focus of AG 2 department is the examination and application of methods for the quantification of disease impacts, the so-called "Burden of Disease" studies. In addition to the critical analysis of the available Burden of Disease methods, which have been developed especially for the "Global Burden of Disease" studies, the department carries out its own calculations of the disease burden using secondary data and different measures, as well as exploring different health areas and regions. As a branch of epidemiology, we deal with communicable diseases in infectious disease epidemiology and investigate both their share in the burden of disease and their distribution and spread within and between different population groups. We investigate their differential spread according to socio-economic aspects and analyse the underlying determinants and issues of social inequality. More information...
