Master Physics Network Plan

The degree programme offered is an interdisciplinary, research-oriented Master's degree programme in Physics that qualifies students for scientific work and scientific or research-oriented appointments.

The network plan is only a recommendation. The individual modules can also be completed in a different order.

This degree programme is offered as an international track, i.e. some courses are in German and some are in English. You will have the option to study the whole curriculum in one of those languages, but without the full freedom of choice of the courses.

Specialist approval requirements

The previous (Bachelor's) degree (Physics or with a specialisation in Physics, at least six semesters standard period of study) is checked to see whether the following competences have been demonstrated:

  • Expertise in conducting physical experiments and a basic, substantive understanding of the physical relationships in all of the following areas of experimental physics: mechanics, electrodynamics, optics, quantum physics, thermodynamics and atomic physics
  • Basic understanding of theoretical deductive concepts in all of the following areas of physics: mechanics, electrodynamics, quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics
  • Substantive skills in calculus and linear algebra, including the ability to conduct proofs in these areas

If no degree certificate from a previous degree is available, a provisional degree certificate may be accepted in its place.

Qualification goals

Graduates have an overview of physical relationships based on in-depth mathematical and scientific knowledge. They are so specialised in a particular field that they are able to keep up with current international research. They are able to solve complex physical problems by planning, setting up and carrying out experiments and interpreting the results or using simulations based on basic physical principles. In addition, you will be able to critically categorise new scientific findings and use them in your appointment.
