The BGHS sees itself as an international learning community that is shaped by all its members - doctoral researchers, lecturers and supervisors as well as the administrative office.
Promotion of personal initiative
In its programme and organisation, the BGHS relies on the initiative and commitment of doctoral researchers and promotes a creative, self-determined doctoral culture. The following contents and formats, among others, contribute to this aspect:
- the BGHS Programme is tailored to the needs of the doctoral researchers
- the doctoral researchers have the opportunity to decide themselves on and take responsibility for the organisation of workshops and conferences, the Interdisciplinary Colloquium as well as Study Groups
- the participation of the doctoral representatives in all decisions

Recognition of diversity
The recognition of diversity is a basic principle of the BGHS. Here, women and men from all over the world conduct research on all topics that can be dealt within the Department of History and the Faculty of Sociology. They work as researchers at Bielefeld University or other universities and finance themselves through scholarships or activities outside the university. This diversity enriches the BGHS community and the members' research projects.
