Newcomers to Bielefeld University have many questions. In order to make it easier for all first-year students to get started in university life, the team at the Bielefeld IT Service Centre (BITS) has compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on the topic of "Using IT Services":

After transferring the semester fee, you are a student at Bielefeld University and your application access will be blocked. Once the transfer has been booked, you will receive an e-mail with the access data for the IT services (approx. 8 hours after the application access has been blocked). With these you have to log in on campus.uni-bielefeld.de via "My studies".

After enrolment and payment of the semester fee, students at Bielefeld University automatically have access to the university's free IT services. These include:

  • WiFi
  • e-mail box with your own @uni-bielefeld.de address
  • Computer use in the public PC rooms
  • Virus protection
  • Storage space on personal network drive (P-drive)

Here you can find an overview of which user name and which password have to be used for which purpose.

The personal BITS user name and the university e-mail address are stored in the PRISMA-PRISMA portal under "My data". The access data for the PRISMA portal can be found on the confirmation of enrolment.

The easiest way to access the e-mail address is via the Webmail.

If the initial password does not work or if you do not like the assigned password or have forgotten it, you can change or reset it yourself in the PRISMA-Portal.

If the password for PRISMA does not work, you can use the link "Forgot your password?" and have a new password for PRISMA sent to you by e-mail.

The most convenient way to access the campus network and the internet is to connect via the Eduroam WLAN. Instructions for this can be found here.

Everyone who has an e-mail address of Bielefeld University can forward incoming e-mails to one or more e-mail addresses of their choice.

There are many terms for the login name to the various IT services at the university. User name, identifier, username, matriculation number or UniID are the most common terms. In addition, there are various combinations with which you have to log in. Here is an overview of what has to be used where.

There are some software products, such as Sophos Anti-Virus or MS Office, which can be obtained free of charge or at a reduced price with student status through the University of Bielefeld:
