Apprenticeship as an IT specialist for system integration

Every year, the Bielefeld IT Service Centre offers two school leavers the opportunity to train as IT specialists in system integration (m/f/d). The apprenticeship usually lasts three years. BITS trains a total of six trainees in parallel.

Nothing works without IT - and you make sure that everything works

Whether it's Wi-Fi on campus, servers for research or IT workstations for employees - powerful IT is behind everything. As a prospective IT specialist for system integration, you can be an important part of this.

At the Bielefeld IT Service Centre (BITS), we offer you practical and versatile training - with a Chamber of Industry and Commerce qualification to kick-start your career.

What you can expect

During your three-year dual training programme, you will learn step by step how to plan, set up and securely operate complex IT systems.

You will:

  • Install and configure clients and servers
  • Set up and maintain networks
  • Analyse and solve IT problems
  • Implement IT security measures
  • Advise and support users
  • Work on or design real projects

You will not only work at your desk, but also directly on hardware, network components or in data centre environments.

Your work will support around 30,000 students, staff and researchers at Bielefeld University.

How your apprenticeship works

The training programme usually lasts three years (a shorter period is possible if the requirements are met).

Practice at BITS

You will pass through various departments within our IT department and familiarise yourself with different areas of focus:

1st year of training - IT workstations & support

  • Setting up PCs and printers
  • Software distribution and system customisation
  • Error analysis and ticket processing
  • Data migration and data backup
  • Customer contact and service

2nd year of training - Networks, IT security and communication

  • Network basics (e.g. VLANs, protocols)
  • Configuration of switches and WLAN, as well as VoIP
  • VPN, firewall and security concepts
  • Data protection
  • Service desk and support processes

3rd year of training - Servers, platforms and preparation for graduation

  • Server hardware and virtualisation
  • Linux and Unix systems
  • Storage and database systems
  • Automation and scripting
  • Monitoring and system monitoring
  • Final phase: preparation and project identification

Depending on your interests, you can set your own focus and actively work on project ending dates.

Vocational school

In addition to your practical training, you will attend two school blocks per training year at the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Vocational College in Detmold (approx. 6-7 weeks per block). Among other things, you will specialise in

  • IT systems technology
  • network technology
  • programming
  • Economic and business processes
  • German, English, sport
  • Preparation for your final exam

At the end of your training, you will complete

  • an independent final project with documentation,
  • a presentation (specialised lecture) to the IHK,
  • a written and oral examination.

Upon successful completion, you will receive the IHK vocational qualification and get off to a flying start!

What you should bring with you

  • Intermediate school leaving certificate or higher
  • Good knowledge of German and English
  • Ability to think logically
  • Interest in IT and technical contexts
  • Ability to work in a team and initiative
  • Reliability, diligence and ability to concentrate

Above all, your motivation to deal with technology and solve problems systematically is important.

Your perspectives

After your training you will be able to:

  • Operate and support IT systems independently,
  • work in areas such as networks, servers or IT security,
  • gain further professional qualifications (e.g. specialisations, certificates).

Training framework conditions

  • Remuneration in accordance with the collective agreement for trainees in the federal states (TVA-L BBiG)
  • 30 days holiday per year
  • Internal training and further education opportunities
  • Possibility of external training courses or internships
  • Work in a large, experienced IT team, BITS is modern and team-orientated

  • Job opportunities are usually published between June and August.
  • Submit your application online via the portal.
  • After the application phase: Invitation to the online recruitment test for suitable applicants.
  • Successfully passed the test? Invitation to an interview (approx. September).
  • Did that also work out? Start of training on 1 August of the following year.
