Mathematical and Theoretical Physics

The Faculties of Physics and Mathematics established the new interdisciplinary degree programme Mathematical and Theoretical Physics (MTP) in the Winter semester 2014. This new two-year Master's programme is offered in German and English. The option of completing the degree programme in English only is intended to attract students from outside Germany.

In the first year of study, students can choose between a specialisation in theoretical physics and a specialisation in mathematics. This specialisation serves to align the subject fundamentals. It is based on inclination and entry requirements. These elective areas make it possible, on the one hand, to deepen a previous focus of study and, on the other hand, to supplement subject-specific basics in the complementary area. In the second year of study, all students follow a uniform curriculum.

Entry requirements

Suitable candidates should have a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or Physics, with a sufficient number of credit points in all of the following areas:

Mathematics: (at least 32 LP)

  • consisting of Analysis I, Analysis II, Linear Algebra, Measure and Integration Theory.

Physics: (at least 48 LP)

  • Theoretical physics: consisting of mechanics, electrodynamics, special relativity, quantum mechanics
  • Experimental physics: consisting of mechanics, electrodynamics, optics, thermodynamics, atomic physics
  • Practical courses in physics

Advanced studies: (at least 20 LP)

  • from supplementary Modules or courses from Theoretical Physics, Mathematics or both subjects (e.g. Statistical Physics, Theory of Functions)

If no degree certificate of a previous degree is available, a preliminary degree certificate can be accepted in its place.

In the following focus of research in mathematics and theoretical physics we support a fruitful exchange between topics such as

  • Dynamical and integrable systems
  • Lattice gauge theory and numerical analysis
  • Nonlinear differential equations and the early universe
  • Probability theory and random matrices
  • Quantum field theory and representation theory
  • Stochastic Analysis and Statistical Mechanics
